Abstract
Background Approximately 80% of the global population relies on herbal formulations for primary healthcare. The Indian Ayurvedic products market is expected to reach INR 1,824 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 19.8%. The recent pandemic has spurred a notable shift towards selfcare, Ayurvedic and herbal remedies for holistic health, longevity & wellness. Aging is a natural process, presenting health challenges for both physical and mental well-being. Ayurveda merges historical wisdom with modern evidence, offering a valuable resource. This study aims to review literature to pinpoint potential Ayurvedic ingredients for various facets of human wellness. Objectives Identify potential Ayurvedic ingredients for key clinical indications to drive future innovation. develop consensus statements for these ingredients, drawing from clinical studies, monographs, and guidelines gather expert-endorsed recommendations for pre-identified Ayurvedic ingredients evaluate these recommendations using a survey questionnaire methodology Methods PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE databases were searched for clinical studies evaluating potential ayurvedic ingredients for healthy aging, mental health, respiratory ailments, primary dysmenorrhea, and Osteoarthritis. Besides, monographs and guidelines were also searched for individual ayurvedic ingredients with respective indications. Based on clinical data, monographs and guidelines; consensus statements were drafted and critically reviewed by ten Indian ayurvedic experts to identify clinically efficacious ayurvedic ingredients through consensus voting using a survey questionnaire methodology. Results Ayurvedic ingredients From online survey result, it was concluded that experts given Crocus sativus highest recommendation followed by Bacopa monnieri, Chamomile and Rosmarinus officinalis in alleviating anxiety and improving sleep quality (Table 1) Bacopa monnieri and Rosmarinus officinalis were also recognized for their anti-aging properties. Valeriana officinalis and Achillea millefolium were found effective in managing primary dysmenorrhea. Sesamum indicum, Andrographis paniculate, and Tinospora cordifolia showed promise in relieving osteoarthritis pain, common cold, and allergic rhinitis, respectively Novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) in Ayurveda space There are certain challenges of conventional drug formulations in ayurveda such as large molecular size, lipid solubility, degradation in acidic stomach and drug accumulation to the non-targeted area. Ayurvedic drugs possess great therapeutic potential, and thus its therapeutic use can be further enhanced by incorporating NDDS to herbal drugs. From a market perspective, experts have highlighted the potential benefits of administering Ayurvedic ingredients through patches, effervescent tablets, and mouth sprays, as these forms are deemed more effective than traditional Ayurvedic dosage methods in enhancing patient compliance and acceptance of Ayurveda. These newer delivery methods therefore require large scale clinical trials to ensure their suitability, stability, and efficacy in delivering ayurvedic drugs. Conclusions Collectively literature and experts clinical experience help us to identify potential ayurvedic ingredients for healthy aging & longevity, including mental health, respiratory health, musculoskeletal pain, and Osteoarthritis. There is a need to develop evidence-based guidelines for integrating Ayurvedic principles and practices with conventional medicine & healthcare system. To increase global acceptance, collaboration between ayurvedic experts and pharmaceutical industry is crucial to generate credible clinical data and bridge the data gap for ayurvedic ingredients in patient care.
