Douglas J. Gould

Biography

Dr. Gould joined the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine faculty in July 2013 as a tenured Professor. He teaches neuroscience and gross anatomy to medical students and is Vice Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He joined OUWB School of Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he was a Professor and the Director of the Division of Anatomy for six years. Before that, Dr. Gould was an Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine for nine years. Prior to that Dr. Gould worked at Central Michigan University and Oakland Community College. His scholarly endeavors have focused on the design, creation, implementation and evaluation of learning tools for the modern medical student.He has secured support from the NIH, NSF and private foundations for research endeavors. Dr. Gould has published almost 20 peer-reviewed manuscripts and four texts including Clinical Neuroanatomy for your Pocket, Neuroanatomy – Board Review Series 5th Ed. (Fix and Gould), Clinical Anatomy for your Pocket, and Sidman’s Neuroanatomy, A Programmed Text (Gould and Brueckner); seven ancillary learning tools, including Clinical Anatomy flashcards 1st and 2nd Ed. and Dynamic Human Anatomy – DVD (Dalley and Gould); and multiple peer-reviewed multimedia resources and abstracts. In addition, Dr. Gould has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators, is an active medical student mentor and has served as the Chair of the Anatomical Sciences Section of the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Gould received his B.S. in Social Science Health Studies and Psychology at Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology at Wayne State University in Detroit, where he pursued spinal cord injury research in the laboratory of spinal cord injury expert Dr. Harry Goshgarian. At OUWB School of Medicine, he has been a member of a number of committees, including: medical school management, bylaws; faculty search; promotion and tenure; mentoring; student promotion review; and policies. He is a member of several professional organizations, to include the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, the American Association of Anatomists and the International Association of Medical Science Educators. Dr. Gould has received a number of awards over the course of his career, most recently for completing the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute.
