University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin is a state research university established in the year 1883, September 15. There are around 38,463 Undergraduates and 12,682 Postgraduates students in the university. The university was recognized by Sports Illustrated as "Americas Best Sports College" in 2002. The Texas Constitution of 1876 mandated that the state establish a university "at an early day," calling for the creation of a "university of the first class," styled "The University of Texas." The old Victorian-Gothic Main Building served as the central point of the campuss 40-acre site and was used for nearly all purposes. But by the 1930s, discussions arose about the need for new library space and the Main Building was razed in 1934 over the objections of many students and faculty. The university contributes to the advancement of society through research, creative activity, scholarly inquiry and the development of new knowledge. At the graduate level, 40 university programs and specialties rank in the top 10 nationally. Eighteen others rank in the top 25 universities. Dr. John W. Mallet, professor of chemistry and the first chairman of the faculty, addressed an audience of 300 who had come to the unfinished Main Building to witness the seedling of a university being planted on College Hill.
