Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and the gastro-esophageal junction is reportedly the fasted rising malignancy. Heavy smoking and drinking are considered as the two main risk factors to develop a squamous cell carcinoma. More than 95% of the patients with a squamous cell carcinoma are smokers and there is an increase with both the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of smoking.
