Prof Ries is a marine geologist in the Department of Marine Sciences at UNC Chapel Hill. His research program investigates a wide range of subjects in the Marine Sciences including global climate change, paleoceanography, paleobiology carbonate sedimentology, sulfur isotope, geochemistry, biomineralization and carbon sequestration. The common thread throughout Prof Ries work is oceanic change which he investigates over broad temporal scales By combining field studies with complementary laboratory experiments. Prof Ries is able to directly explore the biogeochemical processes that have changed the state of our oceans throughout the geologic past as well as those that will drive critical changes in the immediate future.

Prof. Ries field sites include Namibia, Honduras, Belize, Canada, Western US, Valley and Ridge Province of Eastern US, Florida Keys, and Scotland. His laboratory resources include his base laboratory at UNC CH, the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences in eastern N. Dr. Panackal received his M.D. from Yale and his M.Sc in Epidemiology from Harvard. Currently, he is a physician at the U.S. Department of State and volunteers as a teacher, carrying the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine (Civil Service) at USUHS. In his relatively young career, he has authored several research articles in the field of infectious diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology. He has won numerous awards including being named a 2004-2005 Yale/Johnson & Johnson Physician Scholar in International Health and receiving an award from CDC, while in the Epidemic Intelligence Service, for response to public health emergencies immediately after September 11, 2001.

His Ph.D. research investigated data modelling Issues in hydroinformatics giving more emphasis to modelling of hydrological processes. Renji now working as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Yorkshire Forward – Centre for Low Carbon Futures project in conjunction with Leeds, Sheffield and York Universities. The aim of his work is regional climatic and hydrological modelling for Yorkshire and Humberside region based on projected climate change scenarios.

Renji’s Research Interests include Real-time flood forecasting, rainfall-runoff modeling, hydroinformatics and soft computing in hydrology, regional climatic modeling.

Frith Completed a B.Sc(Hons) in Geography at Aberystwyth University, UK in 1981 and subsequently a Ph.D. at Coventry Polytechnic in 1984 which assessed the raised shoreline and patterns of ice sheet decay in the inner Moray Firth, Scotland. Following a short term appointment at the University of Keele appointed to a lectureship at West London Institute in 1988. Subsequently became Head of Geography & Earth Sciences at Brunel University prior to the current appointment as Head of the School of Environment & Technology at the University of Brighton, UK. Research has concentrated on coastal geomorphology and neotectonics in particular the utilisation of coastal features to determine patterns and rates of tectonic and glacio-isostatic movements. He has been the Secretary of the INQUA Shorelines Commission (1999-2003) and Coastal & Marine Processes Commission (2007-2011).

Frith’s Research interest includes Geomorphology (coastal, glacial, periglacial and Quaternary), Environmental Hazards, Climate Change.

Sam Wong is now working as Lecturer in Human Geography in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Liverpool, UK. His research interests include climate change, poverty reduction, social capital, gender and public participation. His research countries include China, India, Bangladesh, Ghana and Ecuador. He has made numerous publications, including his sole-authored book Exploring Unseen Social Capital in Community Participation (Amsterdam University Press, 2007). He is currently writing a book on renewable energy policies in South Asia for Routledge.

Diakoumi is working as lecturer in the Civil Engineering Division at University of Brighton. She has been the course leader for Level 4 BEng/MEng Civil Engineering and BEng Civil with Environmental Engineering programmes since 2010. Prior to joining the University of Brighton, she worked as a civil engineering consultant on the design of major UK underground projects for the consultancy group Mott MacDonald. She also worked as a part-time tutor in the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton during the period 2003-2006. She received her MEng degree in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2003 and in 2007 she was awarded a Ph.D in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton, U.K. She obtained a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education with distinction in 2009. Janet Hooke is Professor of Physical Geography in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Liverpool, UK. She obtained her BSc from Bristol University and her PhD from Exeter University. She is a fluvial geomorphologist specialising in research on river meanders and river channel changes, particularly the spatial and temporal dynamics of morphological changes, the impact of hydrological variations and the analysis of sediment processes and fluxes. As well as publishing > 80 research papers, books and book chapters, she has advised on environmental management of rivers, catchments and coasts, especially in relation to erosion and flooding. She has managed over 30 research projects, including an EU project on combating land degradation. She works in both semi-arid and humid fluvial systems. She was awarded the 2009 Busk Medal by the Royal Geographical Society, UK, for her field research into river systems and their conservation and contribution to environmental management. She is a past Chair of the British Society for Geomorphology.

 

Janet Hook Research interest focuses on geomorphology specialising in research on river meanders and river channel changes, particularly the spatial and temporal dynamics of morphological changes, the impact of hydrological variations and the analysis of sediment processes and fluxes and also on environmental management of rivers, catchments and coasts, especially in relation to erosion and flooding.

 

Paul Trawick is a socio-cultural anthropologist, trained at the University of Texas at Austin (M. A.) and Yale University (PhD), who specializes in the study of community-based management systems of natural resource management and has a particular interest in the comparative study of irrigation systems. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Anthropology at Cranfield University in the UK, having held previous appointments as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky and as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University. He has also worked periodically as a consultant on water reform for the World Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank in Washington DC. During the early part of his career his fieldwork was largely confined to the Peruvian Andes, but he has since go on to do research on irrigation systems in Spain and other parts of the world.



 

Paul trawick’s Research interest Includes the study of community-based management systems of natural resource management and has a particular interest in the comparative study of irrigation systems and  in Environmental Anthropology.

David works for the Centres funding authorities and outside companies on projects related to the physical environment. These include sustainable building design (­with a special emphasis on school design), embodied energy, global climate change, renewable energy technologies, and energy in the National Curriculum. In tandem with this, developing advanced optimisation methods based on evolutionary principles. Coley holds various positions on a number of regional, national and international committees and bodies. These cover interests in building design, the global environment, acoustics and evolutionary computation.

Coley’s Research Interest Focuses on the adaption of buildings to a future climate and the creation of a time series of example weather (on an hourly time step between now and 2080). Other research interests include Passivhaus design, post occupancy evaluation, the indoor environment, carbon accounting, and the design of buildings for future climates.

Dr. Rich Schultz is an Associate Professor of Geography and Geosciences at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, and holds a Ph.D. in environmental geochemistry from the University of Cincinnati (1991), an M.S. in geology from the Wichita State University (1988) and a B.S. in geology from Illinois State University (1985). He is in his eighth year as a full-time faculty member at Elmhurst College and serves as the Coordinator of the Elmhurst College Online GIS Certificate Program. Dr. Schultz is the sole or senior author of more than fifty publications, book chapters, and abstracts. His major areas of research are: geoscience education, online/distance learning, web 2.0 applications, geospatial thinking, global climate change, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the use of technology in teaching geography literacy. He currently chairs the Geography Education Specialty Group for the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and has served on the AAG Membership Committee as well as chairing the National Council for Geographic Education’s Awards Committee and serving on the NCGE Nominating Committee.
 

Richard B. Schultz research interest includes studies in physical Geography, Geosciences and GIS Studies.
 

Dr. Charles J. Fuller received his Ph.D from University of Georgia. He is member of Association of American Geographers,National Council for Geographic Education, Illinois Geographical Society .His current works include Copy-editing work on The International Journal of Water Resources Development and Defence and Peace Economics. Wrote and published an Advanced Placement Human Geography (APHG) student manual for Wiley & Sons. Compiled and edited test banks for McGraw-Hill and Wiley & Sons. Published several book revews. Wrote modules on Kashmir and the Three Gorges Dam, for ABC-CLIO.
 

Charles J. Fuller research interest includes studies on Human Geography, Geography of Africa and Asia, Economic Geography, Weather & Climate, Maps & Landforms and  Atmospheric Sciences.
 

Dr. Rachlin who received his PhD from NYU in 1967 has been at Lehman College for some 45 years has published over 60 Peer reviewed papers and has been active in research concerning the Waterways around New York City for all that time. As an aquatic ecologist, and evolutionary biologist he has been funded in this research by PSC-CUNY Research Awards, and such agencies as EPA, NIH, and for the last five years by grants & contracts from NOAA/WCS. He is a Fellow of both the Linnean Society of London, and the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists. He is also a founding member of the Association of Northeastern Biologists. In addition to his research activities he has served as the Director of the CUNY Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, has served Lehman College as Dean of the Division of Natural and Social Sciences, and as acting Provost, and has served as the Chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences and as Acting Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences.
 

Dr. Rachlin research interest include Acqatic Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

Dr. Zhongqi (Joshua) Cheng is a tenured faculty and an environmental geochemist at Brooklyn College of The City University of New York. His current research focus is on urban environmental issues. He has been trying to use his expertise in analytical geochemistry to tackle complex environmental problems.  Trained as a “traditional geologist” with a PhD in isotope geology from The Ohio State University, Cheng spent five years at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory researching arsenic with an inter-disciplinary team. At Brooklyn College, he has developed an urban garden soil testing program and research projects on the soil and water quality in New York City. He is also the Director of the Environmental Sciences Analytical Center at Brooklyn College.


 

His current research focus is on urban environmental issues, analytical geochemistry, garden soil testing and water quality.

Hari Pant is an Assistant Professor in department of Environmental, Geographic and Geological Sciences, Lehman College, the City University of New York (CUNY). He received Ph.D.in  Environmental Biology Dalhousie University Halifax Canada in 1998. He is Co-Chair of the Department of Environmental, Geographic and Geological Sciences at Lehman College of the City University of New York (September 2009 – August 2010).

 

Hari Pant research interest includes biogeochemical cycles, sediment/water quality, ecological indicators, global change.

 

Dr. Manca is also an Assistant Professor in the Geography and Geospatial Department at Mason, where she is an Associate Coordinator of the Earth System Science M.S. program. She is also a member of the Recruitment Committee. She is the US lead institution coordinator of project Atlantis, a transatlantic dual masters degree program involving a consortium of 3 universities: the University of Cagliari, College of Birckbek, University of London, and George Mason University. She has 13 years of broad professional experience in the field of Geographic Information Science (GISci). She has been a former Inspector of Italian National Priority Layers and of Regional Geodatabases. She has operated as an Information Technology (IT) director for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the national level. Dr. Manca has extensive experience on an international level, through her collaborations with the National Center for Geographic Information & Analysis (NCGIA) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, at the Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia (CRS4), and at the Italian National Research Center (CNR). She was also the primary Project Developer for the Sardinian Environmental Historical Geopark and has acted as a geoinformation consultant for multiple universities and the government. She has published papers, book chapters and conference papers.

 

Germana Manca research interest includes GIS for the environment, Socioeconomic GIS and Applied GIS.

 

Chunhua Zhang is an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University. He has extensive experience in teaching and research in the domain of GIScience. His general focus is in the application of geospatial techniques to investigate critical environmental problems and to develop new methods for remote sensing applications. His research agenda encompasses many areas of Physical Geography, and naturally links to other disciplines such as agriculture, forestry, urban planning, and general environmental sciences. He is currently collaborating with one Canadian Professors of Geography (J.M. Kovacs, Nipissing University) in the use of hyperspectral, ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR), Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR), and Radarsat-2 imagery for monitoring forest degradation. He also involved in research projects with Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to study the influences of landscape pattern changes on a karst ecosystem in Guangxi, China.

Kadiriye is an Assistant Professor in department of Biology. She received Ph.D at  Erciyes University in 2010. She is an eminent professor with many publications ın international refereed journals.

Kadiriye  research interest includes Plant Ecology and Plant Physiology.

Dr. Marzie Jafari is a professor of urban and regional geography and Dean of the School of Continuing and Professional at Lehman College, the City University of New York. She joined Lehman in 2001 and currently teaches Geography of the Middle East. A graduate of Hunter College, she holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science as well as a master′s from Hunter in geography, with a specialty in Geographic Information Systems. She earned her Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Jafari has worked collaboratively with community partners to expand workforce education and professional studies opportunities and has launched several initiatives. Her projects have been funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the New York State Department of Education, 1199 SEIU, and New York City Department of Small Business Services, Human Resources Administration, and Department of Youth and Community Development.

Marzie Jafari research interest focuses on geography, with a specialty in Geographic Information Systems.
