Mesfin Kebede Gessese

Biography

Mesfin Kebede Gessese studied Plant sciences and plant breeding at Haramaya University, Ethiopia. he started my career as farm manager in the then Middle Awash Agricultural development Enterprise in August, 1998 for one year. Then, he was transferred to Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research and worked as researcher for more than 10 years. Later he was transferred to crop variety release office of the Ministry of Agriculture and served 2 years as variety registration and release officer. In late 2011, he fot a job as lecturer in the department of Plant sciences, Wolaita Sodo University, which later he got permission to pursue  PhD study in plant breeding and genetics at the University of Sydney, Australia. His areas of research are plant breeding and genetics in Coffea Arabica, which involves; collection, characterization and evaluation of arabica coffee through screening for resistance to major diseases, cherry yield, and cup quality parameters. His new expertise is breeding for triple rust resistance mainly genetics and mapping of rust resistance in wheat landraces, which involves characterization of genotypes for resistance to wheat stripe rust, leaf rust and stem rust, identifying new loci for resistance, and mapping etc.
