Dr. Copeland graduated from The American University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In 1985, he graduated from Howard University with a PhD in Pharmacology. Dr. Copeland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine at Howard University. He has taught pharmacology and toxicology at Howard University to medical, dental, pharmacy, physician’s assistant and graduate students for 29 years. He also serves as the Director of Medical Informatics of the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library. Dr. Copeland has served on many committees within the university, nationally and internationally. Some of the most notable committees include: chair to oversee the programming, design and construction of the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library (1997-2001, $27.5 million); appearing twice before a US Congressional subcommittee (2002, 2003, US Congress Steering Committee on Telehealth and Healthcare Informatics ‘Bringing the Benefits of Telehealth to Underserved Populations: New Approaches to Resolving Provider Shortage and Bridging the Digital Divide’); Subject Matter Expert, Chemical Section, National Center for Emergency Preparedness, Department of Homeland Security(2004-2007); and a member of the Scientific Review Panel (1997-present), Literature Scientific Review Technical Committee (1998-2002, 2008-2012), and Environmental Health Information Panel (1993-present) all of which are a part of the National Library of Medicine at NIH. Dr. Copeland has authored or co-authored over 60 publications in national and international journals in the areas of drug abuse, toxicology and drug development for prostate and breast cancers. He holds memberships in the American Informatics Association, Neurotoxicity Research Society, Society for Neuroscience and Society of Toxicology.
