Eric M. Lui received his B.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with high honors from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering (with emphasis in Structural Engineering) from Purdue University, Indiana. Since joining the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Syracuse University, Dr. Lui has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of mechanics, numerical methods, structural analysis and design, structural reliability as well as green technology and sustainability. He was named a recipient of the College Crouse Hinds Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997, received the College Educator of the Year Award from Technology Alliance of Central New York in 2007, was named the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence in 2007, and was awarded the College Faculty Excellence Award in 2009. Dr. Lui is the author/coauthor of five books and numerous journal and proceedings publications, mostly in the areas of structural stability, steel design, numerical methods, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. He served as the department chair from 2003 to 2009. During his tenure as chair, he guided the overhaul of the undergraduate civil and environmental engineering curricula, led the department through a successful ABET review in 2005, oversaw a large increase in enrollment, streamlined the M.S. and Ph.D. programs, and working closely with the development office and several faculty members in the department, succeeded in attracting millions of dollars into the department from alumni.
Dr. Lui’s research interest in the areas of structural stability, behavior of steel structures, numerical modeling, damage identification, and performance based seismic design of buildings and bridges. He is the author/coauthor of a number of research reports and has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles on these subjects. He has served as a reviewer toand is on the editorial board of a number of academic journals. He has also been invited to serve on proposal review panels for the US National Science Foundation and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. He is a member of a number of professional organizations and honor societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute, Structural Stability Research Council, American Academy of Mechanics, American Society of Engineering Education, Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi.
