Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease transmitted by the bite of Plasmodium-infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, to vertebrate hosts [1,2]. Malaria remains a major problem affecting humans today, with approximately half of the world’s population at risk . Each year, Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) infects over 200 million people worldwide, and is responsible for an estimated 660,000 deaths, mostly of children under five years old. 80% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.
