Carlos is an ichthyologist specialising in the ecology and exploitation of cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras). Carlos obtained an honours degree in Marine Biology (BSc) in Chile and later, his PhD at The University of Queensland (UQ) studying biology, taxonomy and distribution of south-east Pacific cartilaginous fishes. Carlos has worked on applied fisheries research balancing ecosystems with economic development. Carlos was involved as research assistant on different projects in behalf of the Fisheries Research Fund (Fondo de Investigación Pesquera) in Chile, mainly on biological assessment of marine resources and environmental impact of artisanal fisheries.
