Dr Chauhan obtained a master degree in Agronomy from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana, India, before completing his PhD in Weed Science from the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy Campus, South Australia (John Allwright Fellow) in 2007. Prior to his current role as a QAAFI Principal Research Fellow, Dr Chauhan worked as a weed scientist for the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines from Jan 2007 to May 2014. At IRRI, he led the weed research team and worked in several South and Southeast Asian countries.
