Background: Salivary Gland fine needle aspiration (FNA) is often challenging and a precise classification of the lesion is not possible in many cases. This presentation will teach how to best report the cytology findings in difficult cases and how to classify the lesions in broad categories when a precise classification is not possible. Objectives: Provide an overview of classic findings in salivary gland fine needle aspiration (FNA) including those of non- neoplastic and neoplastic lesions. Thereafter, a series of challenging cases with histologic correlation will be presented, which will include a discussion on the differential diagnosis and on useful ancillary techniques required for classification. Conclusions: Summarize with the most common causes of false negative and false positive diagnosis in salivary gland FNAs followed by a summary on how to report the FNA findings in order to best guide patient management.
Alessandra Ceolin Schmitt has completed her Surgical Pathology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which was followed by a Surgical Pathology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and a Cytopathology fellowship at the Emory University Hospitals in Atlanta, GA. She has started her career as an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University, where she dedicated most of her clinical and research efforts in Head and Neck Pathology, Cytopathology, and Gynecologic Pathology. In March 2013 she joined the Emory University Hospitals as an Assistant Professor where she has continued her work with a focus in Head and Neck and Cytopathology.
