Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFP) are extremely rare benign tumors of the gastrointestinal tract with the gastric antrum
being the most common site, followed by the ileum. Histogenesis is still unknown and controversial.
A 27 year old female was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting for one week duration. Per
operatively an ileo-ileal intussuscetion along with a mass was identified. We received a part of small intestine measuring 12.2x5
cm with a polypoidal, dumbbell shaped mass measuring 4x3.5x1cm arising from the mucosal surface at one end of the small
bowel was received. Outer surface of the polyp was greyish to blackish and cut surface was grey white, solid and glistening with
myxoid areas. Representative sections examined from the polyp reveal histologic features of IFP consist of spindle cells that are
concentrically arranged around blood vessels and have inflammation, especially eosinophils.
IFP should generally be taken into consideration as a differential diagnosis of peduncular polyp of the small intestine.
IFP of small intestine is not fatal and patients remain asymptomatic in their daily lives except for intussusception or bowel
obstruction.
