Prof. Bamunuarachchi has had his primary education at Junior School, Imbulgoda, and his secondary education at Carey College, Colombo from where he entered the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon in 1964. He graduated with a B. Sc. Degree in 1967, and began his carrier as a teacher attached to Carey College, Colombo and also functioned as a visiting demonstrator in Biology at Vidyodaya University. On winning a Fulbright scholarship, Prof. Bamunuarachchi proceeded to the University of California, Davis, USA, in 1968, where he studied Food Science and Technology. He obtained the M.Sc. Degree in Food Science and Technology in 1970, and on return took up position as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Vidyodaya campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1971. In 1974, he was granted a Colombo Plan-Australia scholarship and entered University of New South Wales, Australia, where He carried out research on modified starches and obtained his Ph.D. Degree in Food Science and Technology in 1978. Professor Bamunuarachchi resumed his duties at the then University of Sri Jayewardenepura and served the University for thirty nine years and retired from his academic services in 2009 as a senior professor. Professor Bamunuarachchi has held position as the Head of the Chemistry Department for more than five years, and also was the First coordinator of the Post Graduate Diploma in Food Science and Technology at our faculty. This program was upgraded to a Master’s Degree status in 1989 through his efforts, and still continues to be a program of much demand. Being a Food Scientist and a Technologist attached to the Chemistry Department, he was appointed to the Chair of Applied Chemistry in 1996. Professor Bamunuarachchi is also the founder Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology at our university. As a university academic he has contributed tremendously not only towards teaching but also to research and development as well as curriculum development by designing many course units both for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, and also for programs for the Sri Lanka’s Technical and vocational education sector.

Research Interest

His research in Sri Lanka focused on Post Harvest management and Processing of Agricultural Crops, Fish etc., Product and Process Development Technologies, Food Stability, Nutrition and Society, Novel Herbal Food and Drug Development, Omega Three Fatty Acid Search, and Pro and Pre Biotics etc. The total number of authored/co-authored publications runs to over 140. He has guided/co-guided more than 350 research projects including nine Ph.D.’s.
