Eric R. Pianka Ph.D
Professor
Section of Integrative Biology
University of Texas at Austin
USA
Tel. (512) 471-7472
Fax (512) 471-3878

 Biography :

Eric R. Pianka is the Denton A. Cooley Centennial Professor of Zoology at the University of Texas at Austin. His research covers a broad range of topics in ecology and evolution. During his career, Pianka published two hundred scientific papers, four of which became Citation Classics. His intercontinental comparisons of desert lizard ecology are a standard textbook example. He has published over a dozen books, including his textbook “Evolutionary  Ecology”.  Currently in its 6th edition, this book has been translated into Greek, Japanese, Polish, Russian and Spanish. Pianka published a synthesis of his lifes research entitled “Ecology and Natural History of Desert Lizards” as well as an autobiography of his adventures in Australia, “The Lizard Man Speaks”. With Laurie Vitt, he published “Lizards: Windows to the Evolution of Diversity”. “Varanoid Lizards of the World” was co-edited. Currently, Pianka is preserving his massive data set for future generations of evolutionary ecologists.

Biography
 Research Interest :

Eric R. Pianka’s research interests include population and community ecology, evolutionary ecology, natural history, resource partitioning, reproductive tactics, foraging theory, allocation, design constraints, thermoregulation, rarity, metapopulations, historical accident and biogeography, species diversity, macrodescriptors, pseudocommunities, phylogenetic systematics, computer simulation of model systems, emergent properties of ecological systems, indirect interactions among populations, metapopulations, fire ecology, disturbance, succession, landscape ecology, and using phylogenies to reconstruct probable ancestral states and to deduce the course of evolution.

Dr. Ozbay’s research and outreach education programs focus on the habitat restoration, she also has research programs to identify environmental stresses and relationships between water quality and naturally occurring bacteria that could be potentially harmful to either aquatic species or humans once consumed via investigation of shellfish tissues using both microbiological and genetic methods. In addition, she is looking at cellular response and population structures of several harmful algal species in Delaware waters as results of changes in temperature, CO2, nutrients, and other changes associated with climate change phenomena.  Her research and outreach programs are established to help preserve natural resources and health of Delaware’s Bays and monitor predicted changes that could be helpful to the state agencies in decision making and management. Along with ecological services (i.e. water filtration, feeding and hiding ground for juveniles fishes, forage habitat) shellfish stabilize our coasts and increase bio-diversity. As her outreach goals, she plans to offer drinking water quality clinic and public seminar to discuss potential issues with having private wells and what treatment to use and expand community outreach oyster gardening program for habitat restoration.

Dan van der Horst
lecturer Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES)
University of Birmingham
UK

 Biography :

Dan van der Horst (PhD) is an environmental geographer and a lecturer in Environmental Policy and Management at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES), University of Birmingham, UK. His work bridges the natural science – social science divide, drawing both on ecological theory and on heterodox economic traditions (especially spatial economics, ecological economics). He has published widely on ‘NIMBY’ responses to new rural technologies, biomass energy and sustainability, spatial targeting of land management subsidies and the spatio-temporal modelling of human behaviour as a driver for land use change.

Biography
 Research Interest :

His main area of research is in natural resource management, focussing especially on the governance of multi-functional land use, the evaluation of policies to provide ecosystem services (especially voluntary policies which seek to entice private land owners to collaborate, e.g. by offering them financial incentives) and the conceptualisation of ecosystem services (and their enhanced delivery) in more cultural/anthropogenic landscapes.

Dr. Wei Huang is a Research Faculty of Environmental Sciences at University of Massachusetts Boston. She received her Ph.D. degree at University of Massachusetts Boston in 2010. Dr. Wei Huang is interested in carbon/nitrogen cycling and ecosystem health at land-ocean interface. Her research interests cross coastal watershed, estuaries, the coastal ocean and groundwater aquifer, focus on utilizing multiple tools to study energy flux along the food web and to predict carbon/nitrogen transport from land to ocean. Dr. Wei Huang has published high quality research papers in leading international journals with over 100 citations and serves as reviewer in high-impact journals.

Biography
 Research Interest :

In order to elucidate specific mechanisms in carbon and nitrogen transport and transformation I incorporate multidisciplinary technology and methodology in my research, including hypothesis testing, field observations and in situ manipulations, novel laboratory methods employing stable-and radio isotope analyses, high resolution sensors, and large datasets statistical analyses, watershed GIS and hydrologic modeling, nearshore biochemical modeling and remote sensing.
