Acting Manager Central Analytical Laboratory
International Center for Biosaline Agriculture
United Arab Emirates

Dr. Shabbir A Shahid is a Senior scientist at Dubai based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), joined ICBA in 2004 as salinity management scientist and has over 33 years experience (Pakistan, UK, Australia, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates) in agriculture related research, development and extension activities. He held positions, associate professor (University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan), and associate research scientist in Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Kuwait and manager of soil resources department, Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency(ERWDA) Abu Dhabi, UAE. During his professional career, he has been working in applied agriculture projects in many countries (Pakistan, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Niger, Morocco, Jordan, Spain, Syria etc). In the GCC countries, he has been working for the last 18 years and very familiar with agriculture activities, climate change challenges, and food security and soil management issues. As Technical Coordinator, he completed soil survey of Kuwait (1996-2001) and Abu Dhabi emirate (2005-2009). In the latter survey, by the first time in the history of soil research he with his co-associates discovered Anhydrite soil in the coastal land of Abu Dhabi emirate. His innovative and pioneered research on the saline soils of Pakistan proved the dominance of thenardite (Na2SO4) and mirabillite (Na2SO4.10H2O) minerals in contrast to older hypothesis of halite (NaCl) dominance. He is a prolific author of over 150 publications in peer reviewed refereed journals, proceedings, books and manuals.
He is currently - life member and Member Council of the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC), and member advisory board “World Forum on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security-WFCCAFS”. He enjoys working as member of scientific committees, international advisory boards of international conferences, and editor of scientific books, and reviewer of scientific journals. He is a recipient of Sir William Roberts and David A Jenkins Awards.
