Deborah Helitzer is Professor of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Education in the Health Sciences Center. She receives national and international recognition for her research and scholarship in qualitative and formative research and evaluation methods for health services and public health interventions. Dr. Helitzer is also Associate Director of the Health Sciences Center's Clinical and Translational Science Center, and leader of its Research Education, Training and Career Development. She is a regular contributor to NIH CSR Study Sections and a consistent reviewer for several peer-review journals. She received the Sarah Mazelis “Best Paper of the Year Award” for Health Promotion Practice, in November 2009 and the UNM Population Sciences Researcher of the Year in 2013. She is also recognized for her outstanding teaching, education and service accomplishments both at UNM and at other institutions, with three "Excellence in Teaching" awards. She is the Program Director of the Mentored Career Development Scholars Program and an instructor in the Masters of Science of Clinical Research Program in which she teaches grantsmanship.
