Biography

Dr Salah T. Al Awaidy is a Communicable Diseases Adviser in Health Affairs, Ministry of Health, Muscat, Oman. Dr. Salah Al Awaidy is a medical doctor and holds a Master’s in Epidemiology. He is currently the adviser on Communicable Disease Surveillance, Elimination and Eradication of Communicable Diseases of Public Health Importance, EPI, vaccine supply chain system and IHR at the Ministry of Health, Oman. He was the Director of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control at MoH, HQ, Oman between 1997-2011, IHR national focal point 2002-2013 and was a member in several of the professional committees namely: Strategic Advisory Group on Immunization (SAGE), WHO Geneva (2005-2007); Strategic Advisor Group on Vaccine and Store Management Training Courses (2005-2008), WHO Geneva; Strategic TB Advisory Board (STAG) 2007-2011 and AIDS Regional Advisory Group (ARAG), EMRO since 2005; and member of the GAVI Independent Review Committee (IRC) from 2014- till date. He also currently serves as IHR Emergency Committee on Polio and MERS-CoV. In addition, he was also a member and the secretary of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) of the Ministry of Health, Oman from 1997 to August 2011 and a current member of the national NITAG, member of the ad hoc Governing Council of IAIM. He works closely with the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Health Organization (EMRO); he is a regional member of many Infectious Control Advisory Committees. He is also an ex-member of the EMRO Groups on AIDS, TB and Infection Control, MoH, Oman. He has been involved in research related to vaccine preventable diseases, communicable diseases surveillance and other communicable diseases, both locally, regionally and globally. Dr. Al Awaidy has served as the manager for the Vaccine and Central Store Management Training Courses since 2005 (WHO-Collaboration Center) till to date. He lead his team and conducted a number of training globally and regionally. Dr. Al Awaidy has participated as an expert in many national, regional and international meetings and conferences. She has also been an adviser and organizer to the many national communicable diseases and vaccine preventable disease and surveillance Congress and Symposium. Dr. Al Awaidy has authored or been the co-author of over 30 publications on a large variety of health topics. He has played a pivotal role in national preparedness and management of SARS, pH1N1, avian influenza, and eradication of Polio, elimination of Measles, Rubella, maternal and neonatal tetanus, Leprosy and control of TB, schistosomiasis and other vaccine preventable diseases. Under his leadership, Oman was certified as dracunculiasis free, polio free, and Central Vaccine Store. On June 2012, he was honored by the CDC as the best achieving person in Oman. Presently, he is actively participating in many WHO and congress meetings both globally and regionally. His main interests are the EPI programme, vaccination and vaccinology, vaccine supply chain as well as Communicable Diseases Surveillance, Eradication and Elimination and IHR.
