Abstract

Uttarakhand is a hill state of India. There are dirt paths, stone steps, and goat trails wind through the hills for several kilometers before reaching some villages from the road but no proper lighting system and safety system available and if available with little number to manage activities related to household farm, livestock and income generating productive tasks. In such situation women have to work for cutting and carrying firewood from the forest and fetching of fodder and water during the night time also. In such harsh situation they are really sufferer. In the present study total 120 hill families were selested to study the injuries, accidents and health problem faced by hill families due to absence or poor lighting system. The record of last 10 years related to accidents and injuries due to poor lighting system were problem in studying, cooking, handling cattle during delivery, psychological fear, low productivity, wild animal bite to cattle/ poultry/other pet animal, fall/ slip outside while fetching of fodder and fuel. Beside these major illness and symptoms among respondents were night vision problem, eye irritation, blurred vision, eye strain, flickering of eyes, headache, and breathing problem. Chi-square tests showed that these problems, occurred due to poor lighting conditions and using kerosene lamp. Hence solar safety gadgets including solar safety belt and solar safety torch were designed to humanize the work of families.
