Biography

Dr. Andrew DeWan received his Ph.D. in statistical genetics from The Rockefeller University. His research interest is to understand how variation in the human genome contributes to complex human diseases. His current work uses high-throughput methods to conduct genome-wide association studies to map disease susceptibility loci as well as developing methods to improve how this information is utilized and interpreted. His past work mapping disease genes has led to the discovery of susceptibility loci for age-related macular degeneration, non-syndromic hearing loss, renal function and myopia. Current projects include a genetic study of childhood asthma in collaboration with the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric and Environmental Epidemiology, a study of genetic factors predisposing women to develop preeclampsia during pregnancy in collaboration with researchers at Brown and Yale Universities, and an international study to examine the genetics of small bowel carcinoid cancer.
