Late talkers

Late talkers tend to demonstrate poorer language ability and be at the lower end of the normal range than typical talkers. Late talkers exhibit considerably lower scorers on language measures than typical talkers once they reach adolescence. A late talker is a toddler experiencing late language emergence which can also be an early or secondary sign of an autism spectrum disorder, or other developmental disorders, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disability, learning disability, social communication disorder, or specific language impairment. Lack of language development, comprehension skills, and challenges with literacy skills are potential risks as late talker’s age. Outlook for late talkers with or without intervention is generally favorable. Toddlers have a high probability of catching up to typical toddlers if early language interventions are put in place Language development.

Aphasia

Aphasia Aphasia is a language disorder that affects how you communicate. It's caused by damage in the area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. Aphasia leaves a person unable to communicate effectively with others. Aphasia is a disorder where you have problems speaking or understanding what other people say. It usually happens because of damage to part of your brain but can also happen with conditions that disrupt how your brain works. There are also multiple types of aphasia. The location of the damage in your brain determines the type of aphasia you have. This condition is almost always a symptom of another problem, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury. It can also happen as a temporary effect of conditions like migraines. Aphasia is often treatable, especially when the underlying condition is treatable or can heal on its own.

Active listening

Active listening: Active listening is a communication skill that involves going beyond simply hearing the words that another person speaks. It's about actively processing and seeking to understand the meaning and intent behind them. It requires being a mindful and focused participant in the communication process. Rationale: Effective communication consists of both speaking and listening. Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding. It is an important first step to defuse the situation and seek solutions to problems. This lesson gives students the opportunity to identify what active listening is and why it is important in managing conflicts.

Stuttering therapy

Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects the rhythm and flow of how you talk . This disorder disrupts how you speak, causing unintended sounds, pauses or other problems with talking smoothly. Stuttering is a condition that happens when muscles you use for speaking twitch or move uncontrollably while you talk. This disrupts the flow of your speech and causes pauses, unintended sounds and sticking on words. This condition usually affects children but can have impacts at any age. It’s treatable, and most people ultimately recover. Many of the current therapies for teens and adults who stutter focus on helping them learn ways to minimize stuttering when they speak, such as by speaking more slowly, regulating their breathing, or gradually progressing from single-syllable responses to longer words and more complex sentences.

Articulation disorders:

Articulation disorders: One type of speech sound disorder is articulation disorder, which involves problems producing specific speech sounds. Articulation is the process humans go through to produce sounds, syllables and words. A child with articulation disorder may be unable to produce certain sounds or form particular sounds incorrectly. Articulation disorder is a common condition when your child can’t make specific sounds. For example, they may always replace “r” with “w” or “th” with “s.” The disorder isn’t related to any issues with their brain, mouth or hearing. A speech-language pathologist can diagnose the condition and help your child communicate clearly using speech therapy. Most children learn to make all speech sounds by age 4 or 5. Children who have trouble speaking clearly after that age may have a speech sound disorder. One type of speech sound disorder is articulation disorder, which involves problems producing specific speech sounds.
