Biography

Expertise in the field of emerging infectious diseases, 10+ years of hands-on and supervising high-containment work (BSL-3, BSL-4), select agent work, and development of countermeasures against bioterror and agroterror threats

• Field study experience (e.g., SARS outbreak in Hong Kong, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever outbreaks in Iran)

• Design of high-containment facilities

•Vaccine development against High Risk Pathogens

•Translational research Responsible for all antiviral biodefense vaccine development strategies for NewLink Genetics Corporation (BioProtection Systems Corporation is now a wholly owned subsidiary). - One Health concept: focusing mainly on the development of countermeasures for human use, but also on the co-development of livestock vaccines (following the DIVA concept) for certain zoonotic pathogens to address bioterror and agroterror. - Expanding vaccine development program from biothreat pathogens towards emerging infectious diseases.

Research Interest

(1) Vaccine and small molecule inhibitor efficacy testing in collaboration with several academic, industrial and government organizations

(2) Reverse genetics for several emerging infectious diseases (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Lassa virus, Junin virus, Nipah virus, Hendra virus, Ebola virus, ...)

(3) Rational vaccine design - Trained 20 scientists in high-containment 'facility', 'suit room' and 'in lab' activities - Generated BSL-4 SOPs and Biosafety Manuals - Select Agent Registration - Mediator between scientists and policy makers
