Dr. Prasad K. Bhaskaran is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture.He is involved in teaching Physical & Dynamical Oceanography, Marine Acoustics, Ocean Circulation & Wave Modeling, Port & Harbor Engineering for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. His research interests include areas like Physical Oceanography, Sediment Transport Dynamics, Coastal Processes, Tsunamis, Ocean Wave Modeling and Ocean Wave Climate Projections. Prior to joining IIT Kharagpur in December 2004, he has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Naval Research Laboratory, USA; Physical Oceanographer at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Project Scientist at IIT Delhi and INCOIS, Hyderabad. He was the task leader and Coordinator of the prestigious United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) project titled ï¿½Oceanographic Survey in support of the Marine and Coastal Damage Assessmentï¿½ while at KFUPM, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He has also worked on various projects sponsored by Saudi American Oil Company (SAUDI-ARAMCO). He was involved in the core Model Development team for Operational medium range wave forecasting system for the Gulf of Mexico, and extreme wave forecasts for oil rigs and offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, USA. He was also involved in Developing a capability to forecast coastal ocean optics:Minerogenic scatteringï¿½bio-optical model and Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) for naval warfare activities. He was involved in the Technology transfer of Operational Wave Modeling exercise for the Indian Ocean. He is the lead member in the Development of a Tsunami Travel Time Atlas for the Indian Ocean. A Comprehensive Ocean Atlas for the Indian Ocean utilizing ARGO data was developed used widely by the Ocean community.He is involved in various Sponsored and Consultancy projects at IIT Kharagpur. He had supervised four Ph.D students and served as project guide for several Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. He published two books, two book chapters and four patents/copyrights to his credit. He has published several papers in peer-reviewed prestigious International Journals like the Royal Meteorological Society, Elsevier etc. Over the years, he has been involved in various National Sponsored and Industrial Consultancy Projects. At present is he is the Research Coordinator of Earth Science & Technology Cell (ESTC) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. He is a member Board of Studies for CUSAT, Kochi and Adjunct Faculty at IIT Bhubaneshwar. He is the receipient of the James Rennell MoES Young Fellow awarded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. He has delivered lectures at various national meets as an invited speaker. He is a member of Professional bodies like Indian Society of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics and Ocean Society of India. He is also an editorial board member of the Journal of Oceanography & Marine Sciences. He is a reviewer of research papers in several National and International Journals. He has research collaborations with organizations like Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad; Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram; INCOIS, Hyderabad; IIT Delhi; Louisiana State University, USA; Florida Gulf Coast University, USA; Naval Research Laboratory, USA. He has participated in several National/International Conferences/Symposia and has 72 publications.
