Biography

Professor Hussein Kanaan is the head of department of "Pharmaceutical Technology and Practice" at the faculty of Pharmacy of the Lebanese University. He has a PHD in pharmaceutical sciences. Actually, Pr. Kanaan, is responsible for Research project « Natural products of marine origin "at the Faculty of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Doctoral School of Science and Technology (DSST). He has more than 34 publications in these domains, published in the international revues, and he has participated at many international congresses. He is a member of interuniversity cooperation between DSST and the national university of Pharmacy, Vladivostok (Russia). The main research interest of pr. Kanaan concerns algae in order to elucidate their use in medical and nutritional application. For this purpose, pr. Kanaan and his team focused their attention on studying marine algae in Lebanon. This field of research is still young and appears to be promising for the future. Algae growing on the Lebanese coast represent an unexploited natural resource. The lack of information surrounding them has pushed us to identify their species and to determine their nutritional and medical importance. A detailed guide is the result of our efforts and could become an interesting reference especially for academicians and researchers. Algae are a source of life for aquatic species. They also help to maintain oxygen levels on the planet and are an important medical and nutritional natural resource. Each species of marine algae has its own growing season. Some appear in April and disappear in July, others grow from July to October and very few species grow in winter. In our research, we unveil the marine resources of our coastline with high definition pictures of different species, taken in their usual aquatic environment. The guide "Marine Algae of the Lebanese Coast" 1st edition 8/10/2015 provides: - A general overview of algae species, their modes of reproduction, contents in active ingredients and drying methods. - All determined algae species with high resolution pictures taken underwater for each of the species and a description of its nutritional and medical importance.
