Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a world - wide problem and India is one of the worst effected countries. However TB is a curable disease
if it is detected early and treated with sensitive drugs. The causative agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has been found to
sleep for 100, 000 years in the skull of homosapiens. The organism often evolves as drug - resistant strains, multidrug-resistant
(MDR) (resistant at least to two TB drugs - rifampicin and isoniazid), and extensively drug - resistant (XDR) (additionally
resistant to a fluoroquinolone and kanamycin/amikacin/capreomycin) due to non-adherence to treatment or treatment with
insensitive drugs. Alarming incidences of drug resistance and HIV co-infection pose a major threat to TB control efforts. Early
easy cost effective detection, drug sensitivity test (DST) and strategic approaches towards target identification for therapeutic
intervention, are required to combat the disease. Our initiatives in these areas will be discussed.
