Carbapenem resistant gram negative bugs, a global disaster

Abstract
Carbapenem resistant Entero-bacteriaceae is a worldwide threat, with a rapid increase in the prevalence. More than half of the world population lives in Asian countries, the major epicenter of Gram negative resistance. . These superbugs are a threat not just to the region but to the whole world. Infections caused by these superbugs constitute a major therapeutic challenge, as only one or two drugs may remain active against these bugs. NDM1 producing bacteria have spread from South Asia to the west, and KPCs from America to the east. Colistin resistant bugs -Pan drug resistant bugs- have already made their grand entry. In the near future lifesaving places like the ICU will have to be shut down, procedures like organ transplant will come to a halt. The doomsday is soon approaching. It?s time to wake up. In fact, the report of the Chief Medical Officer of UK highlights the need for international action on antimicrobial resistance. Effective action requires a consolidated effort; there should be an increased awareness of antimicrobial resistance as a priority at national and international levels. This effort particularly needs to support local initiatives around the world such as the Chennai Declaration where, for the first time, medical societies in India came together to discuss the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Such initiatives should be implemented in countries with high antimicrobial resistance. Chennai Declaration recommendations, if implemented, can help alleviate the magnitude of the disaste
