Abstract
A wide variety of underwater applications like underwater sensor networks, interaction between un-tethered underwater vehicles, disaster warning systems, deep water positioning systems to track autonomous underwater vehicles, manned submersibles and recently an aircraft drowned in sea etc., warrant for a wireless communication network and system. Underwater wireless communications are usually established using acoustic signals. Electromagnetic signals are not suitable for underwater communication, as they can propagate only short distances in ocean. However, acoustic signals have their own limitations in the form of low speed, limited data rate etc. In this paper, energy efficient cross layer protocol is analyzed for an underwater wireless sensor network in a shallow water region of up to 100 m depth. A new integrated MAC and routing protocol is proposed with 50 nodes for underwater acoustic wireless sensor network in shallow water region. MAC protocols like GOAL and FAMA are analyzed with VBF routing protocol. The analysis is carried with the metric performance of throughput, delay and energy consumption. It is observed that GOAL-VBF proposed protocol performs better in packet delivery rate, less delay in transmission and less energy consumption compared to FAMA-VBF protocol. The analysis is carried using Aqua SIM; a special tool for real time underwater acoustic wireless sensor network.
