Abstract
Turkey is a peninsula shaped country surrounded by 4 seas; Black Sea lies to the north of Turkey, Aegean Sea places at the west coast of Turkey between Greece and Turkey, Mediterranean Sea lies at the south part of Turkey, and lastly Sea of Marmara is an inland sea connects Aegean Sea to Black Sea by Bosphorus Strait and Dardanelles Strait. Beside of Turkey?s geopolitical importance, Turkey is a transit country in maritime transportation of different kinds of products such as natural gas, oil, wheat, coal, etc. Turkish ports receive significant amount of cargo via seaborne transportation. Number of maritime transportation increases day by day since maritime transportation is a lot cheaper than any other kind of transportation nowadays. Marine pollution has been a growing concern as a result of increasing activity of maritime transportation in Turkish territorial waters for the last three decades. In this paper, general information about recent transportation numbers and updated trends in shipboard petroleum wastewater treatment in Turkey will be presented. Also, some important input and output data of Istanbul?s Haydarpasa Waste Reception Plant will be given. Characterization of bilge water from Haydarpasa Waste Reception Plant will be expressed, recent problems of the plant will be discussed and solutions for those problems will be discussed.
