Dr. Soslau\\\' s research in the laboratory has focused primarily on varying aspects of human platelet biochemistry. The anucleated platelet, derived from the normal fragmentation of the megakaryocyte cytoplasm, along with the coagulation cascade plays a central role in hemostasis. Several different physiological agonists induce platelets to aggregate forming a protective clot with the coagulation-induced fibrin at sites of vascular injury. Selected platelet agonists (thrombin) and surface receptors have long been pharmacologic targets for regulating platelet activation and reducing abnormal hemostatic events, thrombosis. We have shown that there are three distinct thrombin receptors on human platelets that could be activated by different physiological forms of thrombin. These different forms of thrombin respond differentially to many clinically employed antithrombotic drugs that had been presumed to inhibit all levels of thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. Understanding how each form of thrombin and their respective thrombin receptors work in the activation of platelets is crucial to fine tuning the clinical regulation of hemostasis and thrombosis.

 Biography :

Robyn E. Hannigan’s career in analytical geochemistry began at the College of New Jersey where she earned her B.S. in Biology in 1988. She completed her master’s in and doctoral degrees in Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Rochester focusing on high temperature trace element chemistry. During her post-doctoral fellowships at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and at Old Dominion University she leveraged her expertise in high temperature chemistry into collaborative research projects with biologists and oceanographers. Hannigan’s research has developed unique analytical techniques and technologies to evaluate the relation between biogenic mineral chemistry and the chemistry of the water and sediment in which these organisms live.  In 2007, she received the American Chemical Society Medal for encouraging disadvantaged students into careers in the chemical sciences. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Geological Society of America and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow. Her research and student mentoring have been highlighted by SACNAS, AAAS, and the NSF. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental, Earth, and Ocean Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

He completed his doctoral degrees in 1994 at the State University of New York - Stony Brook focusing on Cellular and Molecular Pathology. The focus of Becks research is to investigate the evolution of the immune system. His laboratory is applying contemporary techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology to an important emerging field in biomedicine: the evolution of the immune system. His investigations build upon the discoveries that key immunoregulatory mechanisms that function in the mammalian immune response appear to be present in phylogenetically distinct marine invertebrate species. His long-term goals are to unravel the defense reactions employed by invertebrates. He has been the Principal Organizer/Chairperson of 2 international research conferences on the evolution of the immune system.  Biography :

Wen Long grew up in Wangcheng District, suburb of Changsha City, Hunan Province, China. Northern Hunan is China’s heartland for farming and Wen, at his youth, was essentially growing rice year after year with his parents, during which he developed interests in studying the nature. In 1993, Wen was selected to go to Tianjin University for college majoring mechanics, where he also took electrical engineering as a minor, which helped him understand how computers work. Prof. Jianhua Tao introduced Wen Long into the field of hydrodynamics in 1995. Since then Wen has been working on applications of computational fluid mechanics with a focus on hydrodynamics. In 2000, Wen was admitted to The University of Delaware Center for Applied Coastal Research to study coastal and ocean engineering with a dissertation on wave and sediment transport under the supervision of Dr. James T. Kirby. During the 6 years at UD, Wen Long produced a suite of widely used water wave and sediment transport models, which are open source and bundled in CoastalSpace available on Source Forge.

My research is concerned primarily with the behavior of coastal sedimentary systems and coastal groundwater hydrology. My students and I are working with the dynamics of coastal processes, exploring, now, the role of infragravity waves and edge waves in modulating coastal conditions especially the occurrence of rip currents. We are involved with monitoring programs for ocean beaches to investigate shoreline changes, beach dynamics and responses to storms. Other research is being done on wakes of large ships moving across shallow harbors. Field work also is undertaken to quantify the seepage of groundwater across the sea floor especially around oceanic islands as well as to investigate the global impact of coastal groundwater seepage.
