Biography

Academic background: MD from Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freiburg, Germany, PhD from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany and MPH from Johns-Hopkins–University, Baltimore MD. Fellowship at NIDA/NIH, Baltimore MD (Behavioral Pharmacology), sabbatical at Yale University, New Haven, CT (Clinical Neuroscience).
Clinical background: Medical specialist in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, completed training in Addiction Medicine.
Research focus: Understanding cue and stress induced mechanism of relapse and impulsive decision-making to improve treatment of addiction and concurrent disorders. Publications include 60 research articles and 12 book chapters. Clinical focus: Research, Education and Evaluation Medical Manager at the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addiction, a 100 bed tertiary centre focused on treating individuals with severe concurrent disorders.

Research Interest

Dr Shütz’ main research interests focus on the clinical and public health aspects of interventions in addictive disorders as well as neurobiological and psychosocial risk factor of mental disorders and co-occurring disorders.
