Karine Bertrand is a clinical psychologist with expertise in substance use, mental health, and addiction interventions. She has led numerous studies using qualitative methods, trajectories analysis, and participatory approaches, and has drawn on this research to develop and evaluate a range of interventions and services. She is the author of a methodological chapter on systematic reviews and of various clinical guidelines related to addictions. Her capacity to lead large research teams is well recognized. She was principal investigator for a randomized controlled trial that demonstrated the efficacy of motivational interviewing to reduce risk behaviours in people who inject drugs.
