Abstract
The cultivation of microalgae offers a cost-effective way of producing biofuels all year round with minimal use of land. We have collected approximately 200 microalgae strains from marine, brackish and freshwater environments in South East Queensland - Australia. After sampling, nutrients were added and single cells were isolated by micromanipulation and flow cytometry. Pure cultures were then characterised by microscopy, DNA extraction/sequencing and metabolite analysis (including lipid accumulation profiles by GC-MS). Phylogenetic tree was built for lipid profile and genetic relationship assessment. Environmental samples were also collected for assessing diversity profiles of microorganisms in general and microalgae communities in particular by using DNA sequencing on the 545 GS-FLX platform. The database is a good collection of oil producing microalgae in the area.
