Prof. Michael Silbermann

Executive Director, Middle East Cancer Consortium

Biography

In the past decade Prof. Silbermann has focused his activities in promoting palliative care in the Middle East. The latter included basic and advanced courses in palliative are to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and social workers working in major hospitals as well as in primary health care centers in the community. These educational and training activities intended to make palliative care recognized as a new medical specialty as any other specialty practiced nowadays in the developed world. Since in the Middle East hospices, as known in North America, Western Europe and Australia, are not as yet in operation, special efforts are directed in the promotion of palliative care services in communities. In order to initiate regional research activity, we have started with regional surveys about the needs for palliative care services, needs for spiritual care and requirements for integrative modalities of care. Concomitantly, scientists and clinicians in the region collaborate in publishing academic work in the international literature.
