Other neighboring countries include Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, Palau, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Indonesia is an archipelagic island country in South East Asia, lying between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is in a strategic location astride or along major sea lanes from Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean. The Indonesian archipelago has 8,844 islands.

Indonesia has a mixed economy in which both the private sector and government play significant roles. The country is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a member of the G-20 major economies. Indonesia's estimated gross domestic product (nominal), as of 2014, was US$887 billion while GDP in PPP terms is US$2.685 trillion. It is the sixteenth largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and is the eighth largest in terms of GDP (PPP). The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Indonesian: Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia or LIPI) is the governmental authority for clinical science, medical sciences and research in Indonesia. It consists of 47 research centers in the fields ranging from social to clinical, medical, natural sciences.

In Physics, Medicine, Chemistry etc including all fields this island nation produced 2 Nobel laureates so far, the Indonesian Ministry of Health in collaboration with the US National Institute of Health has established INA-RESPOND (Indonesia Research Partnership on Infectious Disease) – a clinical research network comprising 9 referral hospitals, 7 medical faculties, and 2 research centres across Indonesia. The network provides a forum to conduct clinical research at a national scale. Novartis has established an outreach clinical centre in Indonesia, focusing on researched on tropical diseases. The NITD - Eijkman Institute - Hasanuddin University Clinical Research Initiative (NEHCRI) aims to be an effective partnership to drive clinical research in dengue fever and tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.
