This study was conducted to analyze muscle activity while using the Pedalo Reha-bar in comparison with that during walking.
Fifteen healthy adults aged between 20 and 30 years were participated in this study. The subjects were allowed to perform
20 gaits on a flat ground and 20 cycles of the Pedalo. During the tasks, the muscle activities of the soleus, gastrocnemius,
rectus femoris, tibialis anterior and biceps femoris were measured by using electro myography. This study showed significant
differences between walking and using the Pedalo in terms of the muscle activities of the rectus femoris, left tibialis anterior
and left soleus (p<0.05). The right rectus femoris showed a significant difference between the muscle activity during walking
and when using the Pedalo (44% vs. 59% respectively). Moreover, the left rectus femoris showed 37% muscle activity while
walking and 55% muscle activity while using the Pedalo. Meanwhile, the left tibialis anterior showed a muscle activity of 20%
while walking and 16% while using the Pedalo and the left soleus 63% and 45% respectively indicating a significant decrease
in muscle activity while using the Pedalo. A comparison of muscle activity between gait and while using the Pedalo in healthy
adults showed a significant increase in the use of the bilateral rectus femoris and showed decrease in the use of the left tibialis
anterior and left soleus. Thus, walking on over ground and using the Pedalo utilizes different types of muscles but the movement
and force displayed during the Pedalo should be studied further.
