Stem cell based therapies offer new hope for stroke and many other degenerative diseases. The rationale behind using stem cells in the treatment of stroke arises from their potential to foster endogenous host repair after the injury and their ability to differentiate to neurons and integrate into host circuits. However, stem cell neuronal differentiation and post-injury transplantation protocols have not been optimized yet. I work on optimizing neuronal differentiation protocol, testing induced pluripotent stem cells in the treatment of stroke and develop optogenetics tools to study stroke and stem cell-based therapies.
