Dr. Wainapel awarded his MD and MPH degrees from Boston University School of Medicine and Boston University School of Public Health in 1970 and 1989, respectively. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1974 and was certified by The American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1976. He is also working as Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Wainapel is a certified medical acupuncturist and has been a featured speaker at conferences in the United States, Canada, England, Japan and Germany, including national meetings of the American Medical Association and the National Federation of the Blind. Dr. Wainapel was a founding member of the American Society of Handicapped Physicians and served as its first president. He has served as mentor and role model for students and physicians with physical disabilities throughout the world.
Dr. Wainapel is the author of more than 60 publications on a range of subjects including vision rehabilitation, complementary/alternative medicine, physical disability among physicians and medical students, rehabilitation ethics, performing arts medicine, geriatrics, spinal cord injury and depictions of disability in the novels of Charles Dickens.
