Fatih M. Uckun, M.D., Ph.D, is the leader of Developmental Therapeutics Program at the Institute for Pediatric Clinical Research at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) (“Young Turks”) and an active member of several professional organizations. He earned his doctoral degrees at University of Heidelberg and completed his residency training in pediatrics, fellowship training in hematology/oncology/stem cell transplantation, as well as postdoctoral research training in immunology at the University of Minnesota. After serving at the University of Minnesota as a Professor of Pediatrics/Therapeutic Radiology/Pharmacology and Director of the Biotherapy Institute, Dr. Uckun served as Director of Research at Parker Hughes Institute in Minnesota before joining University of Southern California. Currently, he is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics.

Vladimir Parpura MD, PhD holds both a medical degree awarded from the University of Zagreb in Croatia in 1989 and a doctorate received in Neuroscience and Zoology from Iowa State University in 1993. He has held faculty appointments at the Department of Zoology and Genetics, Iowa State University and the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, University of California Riverside. He is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Parpura studies the role of astrocytes in brain function. The focus is on exocytosis of glutamate from these glial cells. Using atomic force microscopy in the force spectroscopy mode he also interrogates mechanical interactions between exocytotic proteins at single molecule level. He is making additional efforts related to brain pathologies/injuries by developing scaffolds and dispersible materials, most notably modified carbon nanotubes.

Dr. Donna Nelson, is an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma. She took her BS in chemistry at the University of Oklahoma in 1974, obtained her PhD in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin with Michael J. S. Dewar in 1980, did her postdoctorate at Purdue University with Herbert C. Brown during 1980-1983, and joined the University of Oklahoma in 1983. She was a Faculty Fellow in the OU Provost´s Office 1989-1990, a Visiting Professor at MIT 2003, and assistant to American Chemical Society President Dr. Ann Nalley since 2005. Dr. Nelson´s current research pertains to energy and scientific workforce development and she frequently speaks on the interrelationship of both topics. She has over 100 publications. Dr. Pifer has taught for 30 years, and presently teaches and directs research in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at UTHSC. She has authored/co-authored 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers, has presented numerous abstracts and invited lectures, and received the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2006. At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, her laboratory first achieved in vitro cultivation of Pneumocystis carinii. Dr. Pifer established the first biohazard level 3 laboratory at UTHSC for cultivating HIV and published the first research paper on HIV/AIDS in pediatric patients in the South-Central US. Dr. Hasan Mukhtar has received his PhD in Kanpur University during the period of 1967-1971. Currently, he is working as professor in University of Wisconsin.

Our research focus is cancer prevention and to establish the utility of naturally occurring dietary substances in chemoprevention of prostate and skin cancers. For these studies cellular and molecular approaches in cell culture systems and intervention studies in transgenic mouse models are performed. Chemopreventive efficacies of many dietary substances and molecular targests of their effects are examined. Our long range goal is to establish a mechanistic basis for developing novel approaches for prevention of skin and prostate cancers.

Shree R. Singh, Ph.D., serves as an associate professor of microbiology and Director of CREST center (Center for NanoBiotechnology Research) at Alabama State University. Dr. Singh received Ph.D. in Microbiology from Auburn University in 2001. Dr. Singh has been employed at Alabama State University since 1994. He has been involved with vaccine development and immune system response against novel recombinant and protein vaccines for about 20 years. Dr. Singh has helped secure federal funding of approximately $18 million while at ASU. Dr. Singh has authored over 30 original research articles and one general biology laboratory manual. Dr. Singh has made over 100 scientific presentations at scientific meetings and delivered many seminars in US and India. Recently, he has been engaged in forming collaborations with Indian institutions/companies and Alabama State University.

His recent research involves field of nanobiotechnology which uses novel nanomaterials to develop anti-viral molecules and develop nanosensors for detection of microorganisms.

Thomas J. Webster is an associate professor for the Division of Engineering and Department of Orthopedics at Brown University. His degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995) and in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (M.S., 1997; Ph.D., 2000). Prof. Webster’s research addresses the use of nanophase (materials with fundamental length scales less than 100 nm) materials as more effective implants. To date, his lab group has generated 7 textbooks, 29 book chapters, 91 invited presentations, 192 peer-reviewed literature articles, 306 conference presentations, and 17 provisional or full patents. Dr. Karen Martirosyan joined the University of Texas at Brownsville in 2010 as an Associate Professor in Physics. He earned his BS and MS degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the SEUA and Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been the principal investigator and co-investigator for several Federal (NSF, US AF Research Lab) and State funded research projects totaling over $2 million for the last 5 years. Predrag Krstic is the senior research staff in Physics division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, and adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Antonio Peramo is currently Assistant Research Scientist in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Michigan, USA. Dr Peramo completed his doctorate in Applied Physics at the University of South Florida working in applications of polymer physics and surface science related to glycosaminoglycan biology applied to cancer. He then moved to the University of Michigan to complete postdoctoral work in the area of biointegrative materials and tissue engineering applications in soft tissues. Dr. Peramo developed methods in tissue engineering applications in nerve repair using organic conductive polymers. He has published papers in a variety of areas ranging from surface science to tissue engineering. He has served as a reviewer of peer-reviewed journals in the area of integrative materials for medical implants.

Dr. Peramo interests relate to the study of biointerfaces for the better integration of tissues with implants and medical devices, including implant surface modification, microdevices for drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Current research is aimed at understanding the signaling pathways involved in the inhibition of inflammation and discovering new ways to turn them off. To this end my laboratory conceives, rationally designs, synthesizes, and tests fullerene nanomaterials as therapies for inflammatory diseases with a primary focus on those driven mast cells such as asthma, arthritis, and allergy. Similarly, we want to understand the signal transduction mechanisms of fullerene inhibition of these disease processes. My past research was dedicated to finding new ways to “turn off” the allergic response by inhibiting Fc?RI/mast cell/basophil responses. First, I was the first to explain why “nonreleaser” basophils fail to release in response to Fc?RI stimulation; they lack the tyrosine kinase Syk. A follow-up publication demonstrated that low doses of antigen-as given during allergen immunotherapy-can induce mast cell desensitization through reductions in Syk levels. Second, we demonstrated that co-aggregation of Fc?RI with Fc?RIIb receptors on human basophils could inhibit Fc?RI degranulation. These studies became the groundwork for collaborations in which we developed molecules that could turn off Fc?RI through co-aggregation with Fc R II.

Dr. Maureen Gwinn is a Biologist in the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). She earned her Ph.D at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2001. Dr. Gwinn earned her Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology in 2008. Dr. Gwinn has published on her work in genomics as well as review papers on reactive oxygen species and nanomaterials. Dr. Gwinn has served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals including Cancer Research, Carcinogenesis, and Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health. Dr. Gwinn has organized workshops related to her work in human health risk assessment, and has served as the President of the Allegheny-Erie Society of Toxicology as well as the K-12 Task Force lead for the Society of Toxicology. Dr. Gwinn has also served as the co-chair of the Women Is Science Committee of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

Dr. Gwinn currently works in chemical health hazard and risk assessment with a primary focus on pulmonary toxicology and carcinogenesis as well as genotoxicity. Her work focuses on high-impact exposures and assessment of materials like nanomaterials, asbestos and trichloroethylene. Roberto Guzman de Villoria is currently a Post-doctoral Associate in the group of Prof. B.L. Wardle in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. Roberto received his M.Sc. in Physics in 2000 and his M.Sc. in Materials Engineer in 2003 from Salamanca University. He holds his Ph.D. (2007) from Zaragoza University. His PhD. Thesis is entitled “Optimization of Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Carbon Nanofiber/Epoxy Nanocomposites”. As a graduate student in the lab of Prof. A. Miravete, he had been working on several projects with composites and nanocomposites companies, applying carbon nanotubes and nanofibers to several materials. He is a member of MIT’s Nano-Engineered Composite aerospace STructures (NECST) Consortium. Since 2008, Roberto is appointed expert of the Spanish National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective. Professor Douglas B. Chrisey is a Professor of Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Virginia in 1987 and then joined the US Naval Research Laboratory where he spent the next 17 years. His research has resulted in more than 300 citable publications, over 6,000 citations and an h-index value of 42. He has edited or co-edited 15 books and has 18 patents. He also serves as an Scientific Advisor to Nanotherapeutics, the Chief Technology Officer for Nano Solutions, and is President of Omni-Metrics.

His research interests include the novel laser fabrication of thin films and coatings of advanced electronic, sensor, biomaterial, and energy storage. These materials were used in device configurations for testing and typically have an improved figure-of-merit. He is considered one of the pioneers in the field of Pulsed Laser Deposition and was the lead inventor of MAPLE processing technique. He is currently publishing in areas of metallic nanoparticle fabrication, biosensing, bionanotechnology, stem cell processing, and polyamorphism.

Dr. Philip J. Santangelo is an Assistant Professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. He graduated from Polytechnic University in 1991 with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. In 1998, he obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of California at Davis under Dr. Ian Kennedy, on the development of laser-based diagnostics for multiphase reacting jets and droplet streams. Dr. Santangelo followed his Ph.D. with a postdoctoral fellowship at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California under Christopher Shaddix, and a position in industry, at Micron Optics, Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia. Next, Dr. Santangelo returned to academia as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a research faculty member at Georgia Tech under Dr. Gang Bao until his current appointment at Georgia Tech.

Dr. Santangelo’s current research focuses on the development of imaging technology for the study of RNA regulation and the pathogenesis of RNA viruses.

She currently holds Faculty appointments and Graduate appointments in the UK College of Pharmacy, Graduate Faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill, Faculty Associate of the UK Membrane Center, Faculty Mentor in the NSF IGERT Graduate Training Program and NSF REU Training program joint with the UK College of Engineering. Prior to her faculty appointment at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, she was an Instructor (both in the Graduate and Pharm.D. Programs) and a Postdoctoral Fellow and Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Pharmacy, in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics, receiving the 2007 UNC-Chapel Hill Postdoctoral Award for Research Excellence from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. A Registered Pharmacist for over 10 years, she earned a BS in Pharmacy, PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a PhD Major in Drug Delivery/Pharmaceutics (School of Pharmacy) and a PhD Minor in Advanced Physical & Biophysical Chemistry (Dept of Chemistry), all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Research focuses on the application of nanomedicine/nanoimaging, colloidal self-assemblies, targeted multifunctional particulate delivery, nanoliposomal drug delivery, nanoliposomal biophysics, controlled release drug delivery, pulmonary delivery systems, and nanoaerosol science.

Bjoern M. Reinhard is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Boston University, Boston, USA. Dr. Reinhard is he head of the Nano-Bio Interface Laboratory in Boston University´s Photonics Center. He earned his Ph.D. at the Technical University Kaiserslautern, Germany and his Diploma in Chemistry from the Technical University Munich. Dr. Reinhard is recipient of an NSF CAREER, DFG Research Fellowship, and an Otto-Wipprecht Foundation Award.

Nanotechnology generates new and improved capabilities in sensing and imaging. Dr. Reinhards current research interests lie in the development and application of nanotechnology enabled tools and spectroscopies to probe and quantify complex biological processes at the single molecule level.

Dr. Vikas Tomar received his B Tech and M Tech degrees from India and Germany. Thereafter, he received his doctorate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology-Atlanta, USA in 2005. He worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame from January 2006 till August 2009. Thereafter, he joined School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University-West Lafayette. Dr. Tomar has made over 50 technical presentations, written 1 book, edited/contributed to 3 books and journal special issues, published/written nearly 60 peer-reviewed publications and technical reports, mentored/supported 10 graduate and undergraduate students, acted as a reviewer for nearly 25 international journal publications, and organized/co-organized five national and international symposia for societies such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Materials Research Society (MRS), and the minerals, metals, and materials society (TMS). He has been awarded Air Force Office of Scientific Research-Young Investigator Award (2009-1012) and TMS Early Career Faculty Fellow Award-Honorable Mention (2010). Funding for his work has come from National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, ARMY, and AFoSR. Dr. Tomar is a member of TMS, ASME, AIAA, and Society of Engineering Science. Besides research Dr. Tomar also has been quite active in education and its integration with research activities at both grassroot and advanced levels. Dr. Tomar has been an active participant in establishing a pre-engineering program at West Side High School Gary-IN. He has also been active in integrating diverse groups in technical education both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

His research primarily focuses on molecular modeling and experiments regarding thermal and mechanical behavior of bio-originated and energy-motivated nanomaterials. His work has particular applications in areas related to new materials with tailored mechanisms for desired mechanical properties.

Dr. Wilson E Merchan-Merchan has received his PhD in University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005. Currently, he is working as Assistant Professor in University of Oklahoma.

Dr Anita K Patlolla is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology/Environmental Science PhD Program at Jackson State University Jackson Mississippi USA. She earned her PhD in Environmental Sciences Toxicology – Major concentration at Jackson State University Jackson MS USA. Dr Patlolla has published several research papers and chapters in the reputed international peerreviewed journals and books in the area of heavy metals and nanomaterials. Her articles are widely cited by other researchers in the field. She served as a reviewer for peer review journals in toxicology including Environmental Toxicology, Toxicologic Pathology, Basic Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology Prostaglandins Leukotrienes Essential Fatty Acids MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and Hepatotoxicity. She has teaching experience of more than 15 years. She served as chair and cochair of the “DNA repair and Genotoxicity” session in the Annual Meetings of the Society of Toxicology. She is a member of several professional organizations including Society of Toxicology SOT The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry SETAC American Association of Cancer Research AACR European Association of Cancer Research EARC and Mississippi Academy of Sciences. She received awards such as American Association of Cancer Research MSI Faculty Scholar for the past four years 2007-2009.

Toxicity studies of nanostructures and heavy metals with biological systems with an emphasis on elucidating the relationship between the physical and chemical properties (e.g. size, shape, surface chemistry, composition, and aggregation) of heavy metals, nanostructures or nanoparticles with induction of toxic biological response. Dr. Patlolla extensively worked on the toxicokinetics, molecular mechanisms of toxicity and histopathology of heavy metals and nanomaterials in animal models. Shyam Aravamudhan is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (starting Fall 2010) at the North Carolina A&T State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of South Florida and did his post-doctoral work in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Nanotechnology Research Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Previously, he worked as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emergency Response and Air Toxicants group. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers, referred conferences, 2 patents and has co-authored book chapters. He serves as a reviewer of peer-reviewed journals in the area of sensors, MEMS, nanotechnology and bioengineering. He is a member of IEEE, Eta Kappa Nu and Phi Kappa Phi honor society and has received several awards such as Outstanding Dissertation Award, NSF-IGERT and TRF travel supports.

Syam P Nukavarapu PhD is an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut in the departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chemical Materials Biomolecular Engineering. He obtained doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Science India and later received post doctoral training at Lehigh University and the University of Virginia. He has published several peer reviewed journal articles reviews opinion articles and book chapters in the area of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. Dr Nukavarapu is a member of the various professional societies and has been serving on various editorial boards.

He did postdoctoral fellowships at The Karolinska Institute (Dr.Tomas Hokfelt), Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (Dr. Ralf Pettersson), and Stanford University (Dr. Richard Scheller) prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Yongping Chen was born in Anhui province, China in 1975. He received his B.S. degree in Anhui medical university (1994--1999). He attended the University of Science and Technology of China from 2002--2007 and got his Ph.D. in nano-biological laboratory of the institute of life science, His doctoral research was mainly focused on drug delivery and cancer treatment. After graduation, he served a postdoctoral fellowship in department of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at University of Washington from 2007-2009. From 2009, he moved to Johns Hopkins University as a postdoctoral fellowship.

Research interests include biomedical applications of nanoparticles, image and treatment of tumor in vivo, drug delivery and phage display.

Professor Ahmed M. Safwat was born in Egypt. He received his B.Sc. with Honours from Kuwait University. He received his M.Sc. from Queens University, where he completed his Ph.D. work in two years. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen’s University in June 2003. He is the Founding Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Wireless Networks (AWN). Professor Safwat was the Co-Chair of the International Conference on Wireless Networks, Communications, and Mobile Computing (WirelessCom) 2005. He also served as the Publicity Co-Chair for the IEEE International Workshop on Information Assurance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNIA) 2005. He was the Co-Chair of IEEE GLOBECOM 2004 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks. In addition, he was the Chairman of the IEEE IPCCC 2004 Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN). He was also the Chairman of the IEEE VTC 2003 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks Symposium. He also served as the Co-Chair of the Technical Program for the Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN) in conjunction with IEEE IPCCC 2003. He serves on the editorial and advisory boards of many international journals and conferences, respectively. Professor Safwat has been tasked to lead cutting-edge projects in the field of wireless networks, nanotechnology, and bioelectronics. He is the inventor of many landmark technologies, including PA-VBS, Q-GSL, ECPS, E2LA, A-Cell, ACA, ECCA, MTCD, ASRS, ISRS, PIMCM, R-MIMD, X-MIMD, and E-MIMD, among others.

Professor Safwat research interests include, but are not limited to, wireless networks, nanotechnology, nanomedicine, bioelectronics, stochastic processes, mathematical optimization, and ubiquitous/pervasive computing.

Dr. Hussein holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Dr. Hussein has strong experience in the synthesis, surface modification, and characterisation of carbon nanotubes. He is a principal investigator of many research projects. He has managed to publish over 110 scientific articles, two book chapters, two patents and given talks in invited seminars. Dr. Hussein has received more than 50 national and international awards. In 2005, Dr. Hussein was awarded a Gold Medal for the project “Production of Carbon Nanotubes and Hydrogen” at the 33rd International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products held in Geneva, Switzerland. In the same exhibition, he received a special prize in the field of carbon nanotubes from The Technical Culture-Croatia. For his current research interest, Dr. Hussein was awarded a Gold Medal and “The World Invention Award” for the project entitled “Development of New Synthetic Composite for Injectable Bone Replacement Material” at the British Inventors Society/ The 9th British Invention Show/ 13 – 16th October 2009 in Alexandra Palace, London. Recently, Dr. Hussein was also awarded a Gold Medal for the project entitled “Synthesis of Novel 3D Scaffold for Human Skin Cells Cultivation: An Advance in Skin Trade” at the British Inventors Society/ The 11th British Invention Show/ 19 – 22nd October 2011 in Old Spitalfields Market E1. Dr. Hussein has established a vivid international research group that now focuses on injectable bone replacement materials. Currently, he is an editor for 10 international journals and nominated as Guest Editor for two international journals. He is also grant assessor and reviews articles for 24 different journals.
