School of Medicine and Health Sciences
Monash University

 Biography :

I am currently an assistant professor at Monash University, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. I am particularly interested in the research areas of antiviral development and viral immune evasion. During the past six years I have been conducting research into the recently emerged Hendra and Nipah viruses, both novel zoonotic agents with no effective therapeutics. Their classification as Biological Safety Level 4 (BSL4) pathogens, and their inclusion as National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Category C priority pathogens make novel antiviral drug development a high priority and this has been the core of my recent research.

 Biography :

Dr Garzino Demo received his PhD at the University of Torino, Italy in 1988. Between 1989 and 1991 he conducted research examining the effect of co-factors such as HHV6 on the progression of HIV infection. From 1991 until 1996 Dr Garzino Demo worked with Dr Robert C Gallo at the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology at NCI, NIH. Continuing his studies on cofactors in HIV infection and on HIV gene expression Dr Garzino Demo joined the Institute of Human Virology in January 1996 to further his studies on HIV suppressive factors produced by the immune system. He was a member of the team that originally identified RANTES MIP1a and MIP1ß as suppressive HIV suppressive factors in 1995. Successively he participated to the characterization of another chemokine MDC with broad HIV suppressive activity In addition he has been the key investigator in a large study of antigen induced chemokine release in a well characterized adult cohort MACS cohort. He is also the author of several other scientific publications and reviews on chemokines their role in HIV infection and their regulation. The main focus of his research is on the role of host factors in controlling HIV infection. Recently he and his laboratory have described the HIV inhibitory activity of betadefensins demonstrating that hBD2 inhibits HIV through a novel antiviral mechanism mediated by a chemokine receptor CCR6 that induces increased expression of the antiviral protein APOBEC3G. These findings are of importance in mucosal immunity and HIV infection.

 Biography :

Dr. Desai obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Biochemistry from University of Bombay in 1981 and 1983 respectively. She received her Doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of Bombay in 1991. From 1991 to 1996 Dr Desai did a postdoctoral fellowship at the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. Since 1996 she was a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology at the UMDNJ/RWJMS. During her tenure there she made a novel finding that ISG15 a UBL is overexpressed in many tumor cells and its over expression interferes with protein polyubiquitination and degradation. She also worked on the repair of topoisomerase I TOP1 mediated DNA damage. She showed that one of the repair mechanisms for TOP1 DNA covalent complexes is through the activation of the ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway. This novel repair mechanism is quite significant and may have implications in the resistance mechanism to the clinically used TOP1 directed anticancer drugs eg Toptecan In 2007. Dr Desai joined the LSU HSC as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry Molecular Biology.

Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is a potent immunosuppressive molecule by inducing functional silencing of both innate and adaptive immune responses. An increasing number of studies have highlighted the clinical relevance of HLA-G expression in certain pathological conditions, such as infection, oncology, autoimmunity, inflammation and transplantation. The long-term goal of his lab is to understand the physiological function and clinical significance of HLA antigens, in particular the HLA-G molecule, and the molecular mechanisms underlying HLA-involved in various physical and pathological conditions.
