Michael V. Miles, PharmD, has been a member of the Division of Pediatric Neurology for over 5 years. He is an experienced clinician and researcher, who has studied the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs in pediatric populations for much of his career. He has dedicated his clinical and research efforts to improving the efficacy and safety of drug therapy for infants and children. His research is currently focused on the development of new biomarkers and therapeutic agents for patients with mitochondrial diseases.

Dr. Ho is the Milo Gibaldi Endowed Professor of Pharmaceutics and Director of the DNA Sequencing and Gene Analysis Center at University of Washington, Seattle. He also holds appointments at Clinical Pharmacology Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Center for AIDS and STD Research the Center for Human Development and Disability the Center for Ecogenetics at University of Washington and the Washington National Primate Research Center. His research interests are in elucidating mechanisms of protein and drug disposition, and genetic basis of inter-individual variation in therapeutic responses. Fundamental understanding of these physio- and biological processes form the basis of the focus of Dr. Hos research in developing drug delivery strategies for treatment of AIDS and cancers using drugs, DNA, proteins and antigens. All the research programs in his laboratory have the common goal of delivering therapeutic compounds of interest to select target tissues or cells to enhance drug safety and/or efficacy.

Daotai Nie is an Associate Professor in Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and is a member in Southern Illinois University Simmons Cancer Institute. He received his PhD degree from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, SC in 1997 and MS degree from Institute of Genetics Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China in 1991. He was a recipient of fellowship award from the Cancer Research Foundation of America 1997-1999, New Investigator Award from the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program 2004-07 and received awards from the University of South Carolina in 1996 and 2001. Weizhen Zhang PhD is a research assistant professor at the department of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. The research of Dr. Zhang focuses on defining the mechanisms that underline fuel sensing in the gastrointestinal tract and how the fuel sensor in GI tract coordinates the whole body energy status to control food intake. Investigation involves identifying the intracellular signaling proteins and elements in intracellular fuel sensing pathway in GI neuroendocrine cells. He is an elected Fellow of AAAS, 1988. He received Jacob Javits Neurological Research Award from NIH, 1988-98. He received Distinguished Biochemist Medal from the Calcutta University in 1989. He became an inducted member of the John Hopkins Honor Society in 1995. Yoshihiro Ishikawa serves as a Professor and as the Chair of the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Yokohama City University, Yokohama, Japan. He also works as a Professor of cardiology and molecular medicine at New Jersey Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, USA. He attended both Yokohama City University and Yale University and received the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Yokohama City University in 1984 and 1990. After clinical training in cardiology, he served as an Assistant Professor of medicine and pharmacology at Columbia University, as an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, then as an Associate Professor at Allegheny University. I am currently an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University and I am engaged in several entrepreneurial ventures. I have recently served as the Co-director of the Center for Investigational Therapeutics at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncological Sciences at the University of Utah. I was on faculty at the University of Arizona until I founded Montigen Pharmaceuticals where I served as CSO. I served as CSO of SuperGen overseeing early drug discovery and development.

Academic Appointments: Professor of Medicine Central Clinical Division, The School of Medicine, The University of Queensland and Professor at The School of Human Movement Studies, The University of Queensland I was appointed as Director of Renal Research and Pre-eminent Staff Specialist in the Renal Medicine Department at the Royal Brisbane and Women. Hospital Brisbane in September 2008, Visiting Renal Research Consultant at the Launceston General Hospital and Northwest Renal Unit Burnie Tasmania.

My research commenced during advanced training in Nephrology in 1980 with first author publications in the Lancet and British Medical Journal in 1982. Subsequently I chose a clinical, teaching and Medical Leadership pathway until 1997. After a seven month sabbatical as visiting Professor with Dr. Robert Schrier at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Centre, I returned to my role as Director of Medicine and Associate Professor of Medicine determined to advance the research activities at the Launceston General Hospital and in particular in Renal Research in 1998. In 2005 I founded Renal Research Tasmania. While Director of Renal Research Tasmania we conducted over 30 research projects half or which are investigator-initiated studies. Many of these studies are still in progress. I convened two annual scientific meetings for Renal Research Tasmania. I established research collaborations with the School of Human Life Sciences, Nursing and Psychology at the University of Tasmania and with the School of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland. Since starting at the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital I have convened a combined RBWH and Tasmanian Research meeting and established investigator initiated research studies. I am building collaborations with the Centre for Chronic Kidney Disease, the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the School of Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland. I am currently a member of a Trial management Committee for an AKTN study. I have published 73 original articles, one in press and 10 under review. I have 548 citations and have an H factor of 12. I have had presentations accepted at the American Society of Nephrology Meetings each year since 2000. Research undertaken on Morning Report has been incorporated into guidelines and research on urinary red blood cell morphology has contributed to current recommendations for the investigation of hematuria. This research output has been achieved while being the sole nephrologist for a population of 250,000, Director of Medicine within a Regional Hospital and with limited research infrastructure. My new appointment has enabled expantion of research opportunities in an environment with greater academic and research culture. In particular in collaboration with Professor Wendy Hoy we have established CKD.QLD a multidisciplinary kidney research group investigating kidney disease in Queensland. This includes a database and population of CKD patients for biomarker studies and clinical trials. I have ongoing research in Tasmania with Associate Professor Ros Bull in Palliative care in kidney disease.

Dr. Jian Li is a Principal Scientist at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Monash University in Melbourne Australia. He received his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences and microbiology from the University of South Australia 1999-2002 in Adelaide. He has an internationally recognized track record in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of polymyxins. He has published 55 papers in peer reviewed journals. Dr Guertin has 20 years experience in spinal cord research and 9 years experience in science leadership. He was President and CEO of NeuroSpina Therapeutics between 2005 and 2008 and is also currently Chief Scientific Officer of Eurymedon HealthCare. Over the years he has obtained several million dollars in financing from non-profit organizations and foundations to conduct basic research and drug development. The development of new drug treatments to restore basic locomotor functions in paraplegic and transgenic mouse models. In vitro studies are also performed on isolated alive spinal cords to examine, with electrophysiological and by intracellular calcium imaging techniques, the cellular and intracellular mechanisms underlying effects of new drugs. Histological and immuno-histological techniques are also used to study the effects of new neurotrophic molecules that would allow regeneration and repair of neurons in the brain and the spinal cord after injury.

Dr. Xiaoyan Jiang has received her MD from Shanghai Second Medical University, Shanghai, China and a PhD Molecular Biology from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Currently, she is working as a Senior Scientist in the Terry Fox Laboratory of the BC Cancer Agency, as Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and as an Associate Member in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. current research is directed towards three dimensional molecular structures elucidation of selected organic compounds in the solution and/or solid state by means of chiroptical methods, circular dichroism (CD) in particular. Currently we are focusing on the structure-chiroptical properties relationship of classical and non-classical-lactam analogues, with an emphasis on carba-analogues of penicillin’s and cephalosporins. Special attention is devoted to the stereostructure determination of transparent molecules. For this purpose, we developed a methodology which uses various complexes with two transition metal atoms linked together by a single or multiple bond of general formula M2(OCOR)4, with M = Mo, Rh, Ru or Re. These achiral complexes act as auxiliary chromophores. After the exchange of achiral ligands of the stock complex for different types of chiral ligands, e.g., amino acids, glycols, aminols, diamines, alcohols, amines, etc., optically active complexes are formed. CD of these complexes can easily be measured and used for the correlation between signs of Cotton effects (CEs) obtained and the structure of investigated compounds.

Ahmed Hafiz received PhD in Biochemistry from Jadavpur University, India and completed postdoctoral training at Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine, Germany, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY and University of Maryland, Biotechnology Institute, Baltimore MD. He had been an Assistant Professor at the UMBI before joining the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a participating investigator at the University of Maryland, Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center UMGCC and the Consortium of Functional Glycomics of the NIH. His research has been funded by the DOD and the NIH and he holds one US patent on early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

His research interest has been in the area of basic and translational research of the carbohydrate-binding proteins (called lectins). Particularly, he is interested in the structure, function and regulation of galectins (a family of beta-galactoside-binding lectins) and their interactions with the carbohydrates that mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions during normal and cancer development such as prostate and breast cancers. The prostate cancer cells differentially express several members of galectins, which alter normal cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions during cancer development. They have discovered a novel isoform of galectin-8 that may be relevant to prostate cancer cell proliferation. They have demonstrated cytosine methylation in galectin promoter in cancerous prostate, which may account for the differential expression of galectins during cancer development. Differential expression of galectin repertoire and identification of cytosine methylation of galectin gene promoters in normal and tumor prostate tissues have enabled them to develop a methylation-specific PCR based sensitive assay for early diagnosis of prostate cancer in biological fluids such as serum and urine. In another project, natural carbohydrate inhibitors of galectin are being employed to prevent breast cancer metastasis.

He completed both undergraduate and graduate studies in Biochemistry 1979-85 at University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is serving as the editorial board member for 4 journals and as an adhoc reviewer for about 10 journals. He has published over 100 scientific papers, book chapters, technical reports and patents.

Shayesta Dhalla recently completed her PhD in the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada in May 2010. She is planning for a postdoctoral position. She is also a physician and completed her Internal Medicine residency in 2002 and went on to complete a Masters of Health Science MHSc degree also in the School of Population and Public Health in 2005. Her thesis consisted of an HIV vaccine preparedness study in injection drug users in Vancouver. She has presented her work overseas and has several peer-reviewed publications and is a reviewer for the Journal Vaccine.

Tsung-Hua Hsieh, PhD is an Assistant Research Fellow in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since Mar 2013, located at the Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He received a PhD in Graduate Institute of Medicine in 2012 from the Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan.

 

Research interests include environmental hormone, cancer stem cell, tumorigenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), signaling pathway of cancer and microRNA.

Guofeng Cheng is the Head of Functional Molecules of Parasite Laboratory, Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China; Professor of Parasitology of Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute. He received his PhD in Molecular Parasitology from Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 2004. He received the Life Science Award from Shanghai and MINGZHI Dairies Corp. Scientific and Technological award from Shanghai Municipality and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences of China. He has published 42 papers and book chapters and ~20 abstracts.

Upon completion of his doctorate in chemistry at The University of Tokyo in 1995 Dr. Yan joined the R&D group at Ibaraki Research Laboratory, Hitachi Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. where he carried out research works to develop sophisticated electronic components by utilizing functional polymers. After his research works on conductive polymers at Tokyo University of Science, Yamaguchi for 6 years, and on polymer gels and super water-repellent materials at Hokkaido University for 3 years, Dr. Yan joined the Laboratory of Organic Robotics at the University of Yamanashi in 2007 where he is an Associate Professor. Before his above career in Japan, Dr. Yanhad been educated in China, i.e., in Jilin University (1978-1982) for Bachelor of Science on polymer chemistry and in Henan Institute of Chemistry (1984-1987) for Master of Science on inorganic chemistry. Dr. Yan who is a full professor of Zhengzhou University since 2011, has published 8 books, 59 original papers, and 31 patents. Currently, Dr. Yan is also an Editorial Board Member, Journal of Bioequivalence & Bioavailability (OMICS Publishing Group, USA), and an Editorial Advisory Board Member, Recent Patents on Materials Science (Bentham Science Publishers, Ltd., USA)

Janaina Fernandes is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Biophysics at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She received a PhD in Biophysics from the Institute Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho Federal University of Rio de Janeiro 2001-2005, received the Carlos Chagas Filho Award in 2008. She is serving as reviewer for the Lung Journal New York and as a reviewer for research grant application for the Brazilian Health System, Brazilian Health Ministery and as Editorial board Member for the Journal of Cancer Science Therapy JCST and Journal of Bioequivalence Bioavailability.

Her main research lines includes the discovery of new anti-tumoral agents from Brazilian medicinal plants, development of anti-MDR drugs using proteomics to identify cellular targets and studies of anti-metastatic effects in vivo. She is author and co-author of international patents and articles on medicinal chemistry, mostly in natural products research.

Dr. Bazán-Perkins began her interest in sleep physiology during her undergraduate training at the Instituto Nacional de Neurologia y Neurocirugia. At the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, she obtains a Master of Science degree in Physiology, but shifted her focus to basic lab research in Ca2+ regulation in airway smooth muscle. In 1996, she was a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts University School of Medicine. After receiving her Ph.D. in Biomedicine in 2001, she pursues her interests in airway remodeling in asthma. She is currently a research scientist in the Departmento de Hiperreactividad Bronquial in Mexico City. She has a research group of students that is focused on physiological, cellular, immunological and molecular aspects of airway remodeling in asthma. She is author of 23 peer-reviewed publications, 2 book chapters, and over 40 conference abstracts.

He earned his Ph.D. from University of Mumbai, India and Post-doctorate from Kyoto Pharmaceutical University, Japan. He has conceptualized innovative drug delivery platform technologies and is an inventor in number of patents. He is an invited speaker at international scientific meetings and conferences. He serves as a reviewer for more than 30 scientific international journals and is on the Editorial/Advisory board of various journals.
