Rockefeller S Young is retired Professor and Director of Clinical Electrophysiology & Psychophysics in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Professor Young received a PhD in Physiology from the University of Hawaii School of Medicine (1972). Thereafter he was awarded a NEI Postdoctoral Fellowship Award to study with Professor Mat Alpern and Dr. Harold Falls at the University of Michigan Department of Ophthalmology (1974-1977). He began work in the field of hereditary chorioretinal disorders with Dr. Gerald Fishman at the University Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary (1977-1982). On sabbaticals, Professor Young studied with Professor Davida Teller at the University of Washington (summers of 1986 & 1988) and with Dr. Richard Srebro at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (September 1997 to March 1998).

Dr. Jane W. Chan is Professor of Neurology Neuro Ophthalmology at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Chan has written numerous articles and abstracts, and most recently published an authoritative textbook,OPTIC NERVE DISORDERS.She has been an invited speaker at worldwide neuro-ophthalmology and neurology meetings and at universities across the country. She is also the Principal Investigator of optic neuritis multiple sclerosis clinical studies. She graduated from the University of California, Davis and University of California, San Francisco, where she trained with Dr. William F. Hoyt. In addition to serving on the editorial board of neurology and ophthalmology journals, she holds the honor of being a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the North American Neuro-ophthalmological Society.  Biography :

S. Patricia Becerra is a senior investigator and head of the Section of Protein Structure and Function, Laboratory of Retinal cell and Molecular Biology, National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. She received a Doctorate degree (Major in Biochemistry) from the University of Navarra, Spain in 1979.<br />Her postdoctoral training was in biochemistry of DNA polymerases at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD, and in molecular virology of AAV at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, Bethesda, MD.Her lab has worked on PEDF, an important multifunctional serpin for the eye, currently in clinical trials for age-related macular degeneration. Among major accomplishments: identification of the first eukaryotic non-AUG initiation codon for translation, and structure-function relationships of PEDF. She serves as an editorial board member and reviewer of several journals in biochemistry, molecular biology and ophthalmology. She is an author of more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, reviews and chapters in books

Assistant Professor Espinoza has received her MD at Louisiana State University, New Orleans, Louisiana, during the period  of 1996 to 2000. She then completed an internship in Internal Medicine and an Ophthalmology residency at Washington University, Saint Louis, Missouri, in 2004. She has successfully completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is a member of the American Society for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Gianmarco Vizzeri, M.D. is Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch. He is also Medical Director of the Ophthalmology Clinical Research Center and serves as Associate Residency Program Director. Dr Vizzeri is a graduate magna cum laude from the University of Torino, Italy and has successfully completed a glaucoma fellowship at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center, Department of Ophthalmology, University of California San Diego. Dr Vizzeri is a clinician and a scientist. He has developed expertise in glaucoma and has authored and co-authored over 80 journal articles, abstracts and book chapters in major ophthalmic publications. His current main areas of research interest include ocular imaging, electrophysiology, ocular blood flow and glaucoma surgery. Dr Vizzeri is actively collaborating with the Flight Analog Research Unit at NASA. Cintia S. De Paiva, is an assistant professor at the Ocular Surface Center, Dept. of Ophthalmology, Baylor College of Medicine. She has received a M.D. degree from State University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1989 to 1994 and completed a residence in Ophthalmology (1995 to 1996) and a fellowship in Cornea (1997). Dr. Chung has received his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at the New York Institute of Technology in 1994. He then served as an Intramural Research Training Award Fellow at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.  He further pursued his clinical training in ophthalmology, at the Summa Health Hospitals in Ohio, culminating as a fellow in pediatric ophthalmology and ocular genetics research at the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Currently, he is working as a Senior Research Investigator/Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in the F.M. Kirby Center for Molecular Ophthalmology, at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has authored numerous publications on retinal gene therapy and other ciliopathies, and has been an invited lecturer nationally and internationally on topics of gene therapy. He has been invited to share his expertise in vector delivery to pre-clinical models of retinal degeneration, both nationally and internationally. genetic correction of ciliopathies of the retina, kidney and inner ear. He has been involved in the development of vector delivery to pre-clinical animal models for inherited retinal degeneration, polycystic kidney disease and Usher syndrome, at all developmental ages. In addition to his basic gene therapy research interests, he is also involved in the ongoing RPE65  Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis clinical trials at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania.  Utilizing both adeno-associated viral and non-viral vectors, Dr. Chung is involved in developing and implementing new gene therapy strategies for retina degeneration, and other ciliopathies.
