Dr. Eldred\\\'s research for the past 15 years has examined the role of the gaseous neuromodulator nitric oxide (NO) in retinal signal transduction and ocular pathology. He has determined that nitric oxide is reciprocally related to many retinal neurotransmitters including GABA, glycine, acetylcholine, and dopamine in that NO modulates their release and they in turn modulate NO production. He has also shown that every cell type in the retina can produce NO. Using direct imaging of NO, he established that in retina NO is not freely diffusible. He is now examining the role that NO plays in the early neuronal cell death seen in diabetic retinopathy by focusing on the role that the signaling peptide adrenomedullin plays in producing the pathological increases in NO found in early diabetic retinopathy. He has established and localized all of the biochemical steps in this pathway and is now developing pharmacological interventions to inhibit the pathological activation of the adrenomedullin/NO signaling pathway. Since both NO and adrenomedullin are involved in much ocular pathology including glaucoma, ischemia, and uveitis, a better understanding of the adrenomedullin/NO signaling pathways will have broad clinical applicability.

He has received PhD in Pharmacology & Therapeutics from University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada in 2004, and completed postdoctoral training respectively in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC, and Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Calgary 2004-2007. He received his M.B. (medical doctoral program) and Master of Medicine degrees respectively in 1984 and 1991 from China, and worked as an anesthetist before starting PhD study in 2001. He has published more than 58 articles [PubMed: “zhengyuan xia or zheng-yuan xia”] in internationally reputed journals. He is a frequent reviewer for reputed journals like Biochemical Pharmacology, PLOS One, and Anesthesiology , and for grants agencies like NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) and CIHR (Canadian Institute of Health Research).  
 

My overall research interest is the protection of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), particularly, of diabetic hearts.
 

Dr. Kristian Vinter Juul is Medical Science Director at Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Over the last 14 years, Dr. Juul has worked in scientific and management positions in biotech and  pharmaceutical industry. He has led the advancement of several New Chemical Entities into phase I-III and contributed with original scientific work published in peer reviewed journals and books covering a wide range of drugs and therapeutic areas.

Starting in 2001, and since 2010 being his main scientific speciality, his focus is antidiuresis therapy, including mechanism of action and clinical implications, within three major therapeutic areas: diabetes insipidus, nocturnal enuresis and nocturia – and any other abnormalities in which antidiuretic therapy may be of benefit. His main contribution to the field of science was the 2011 publication of significant gender differences in renal sentitivity to Desmopressin, a discovery with a number of clinical implications for future antidiuretic treatment

Patrick Tso, PhD, has contributed significantly to understanding intestinal lipid metabolism and  diet-induced obesity. Recruited to UC in 1996, Patrick Tso and colleague David Hui, PhD, have built an outstanding Lipid Research Group, recognized for its excellence by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through awarding of a program project grant.

Together with Stephen Woods, PhD, and Randy Seeley, PhD, Dr. Tso played an important role in establishing the Cincinnati Obesity Research Center, which was initially supported by Procter & Gamble and by an  NIH program project grant. Dr. Tso was also responsible for assembling the investigative team associated with the NIH-supported Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center, now in its tenth year of existence.

In November 2008, Dr. Tso took on  leadership of the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP).  The PSTP program enjoys  success through awards  students have acquired and  awarding three additional yearly slots for two years from the NIH.

Dr Hu got the M.D and PhD from Shanghai second Medical University in 1973 and 1988. He worked the department of Endocrinology affiliated to University of Chicago during 1988-1990.
Dr Hu finished post doctor training in University of California during 1990-1993 and worked Department of Endocrinology at UCI as an assistant researcher from 1994 to 1996. He worked in Rui Jin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Second Medical University during 1996-2002 as vice director of Institute of Endocrinogy of Shanghai and vice director of Department of Endocrinogy. He was promoted as a professor in 1999. He was director of Department of Endocrinology of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University and The Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Fudan University during 2002-2010. Now Dr Hu is director of Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetology at Fudan University and director of Department of Endocrinology of Jinshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan Univesity.
    Dr Hu is a council member of Chinese Diabetes association and director of the study group on microvascular complication of CDS. He is  vice president of Shanghai association of diabetology. He is Editor in Chief of the Chinese edition of Diabetes Care and editorial board member Journal of Clinic Endocrinology and Metabolism and Chinese Diabetology.
   Dr Hu has finished many important research projects such as Important National Nature Science Foundation of china, National High-Tech Project of china(863), National Basic Science Project of china(973), National Nature Science Foundation of china and so on. Dr Hu has published 171 papers including JCI, Diabetes, PNAS and two books in Chinese.

Yanmei  Sang graduated from Shandong Qingdao Medical college in 1991.In 2002 , she attained my MD degree from Capital Medical University. From 2006.6- 2007.7 she went to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania for one year’s postdoctoral research. Her postdoctoral research subject is on mechanism of  insulin secretion. Now she is working as a chief physician and associate professor in Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Children’s Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University.
 

Yanmei Sang’s main research field include type 1 diabetes, congenital hyperinsulinism and neonatal diabetes mellitus. She has published more than 20 papers and edited 2 medical science popular books still now.

The main focus of my research effort has been to understand the metabolic basis of ischemic injury and heart failure in diabetics. In this context, our work has led to the novel finding that the glucose metabolizing enzyme, aldose reductase, assumes a critical role in the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemic injury in diabetics and non-diabetics.  Aldose reductase, both the first and rate-limiting enzyme in the polyol pathway, has been implicated in numerous diabetic complications.  Our laboratory demonstrated that substrate flux via aldose reductase adversely impacts cardiac glucose metabolism and is a mediator of ischemic injury. The work of our laboratory provided the insight into a direct link between glucose flux via aldose reductase and ion homeostasis in cardiac tissue. In subsequent studies, we provided the missing link in the ischemic heart, that is, the means by which biochemical/metabolic disturbances recruit signal transduction pathways that trigger perturbation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death in the heart. 

Currently, we have focused on the ability of aldose reductase to act independent of cytosolic redox changes.  In this context, studies are in progress to link flux via aldose reductase to (a) generation of advanced glycation end product (AGE) precursors, thereby activating AGE-RAGE pathway dependent signaling for cellular injury, and (b) activating nuclear transcription factors, such as HIF-1α, that are critical determinants of cell survival. 

In our quest for exploring the impact of aldose reductase comprehensively in diabetic cardiovascular disease, we have embarked on studies investigating flux via aldose reductase in influencing atherosclerotic lesion formation and femoral artery denudation injury.  Studies are in progress to dissect the mechanisms by which aldose reductase promotes/accelerates atherogenesis. 

Driven by the complexities of mechanisms that underlie myocardial ischemic injury and diabetic cardiovascular complications, the goal of my laboratory is to elucidate the importance of aldose reductase, and AGE-RAGE in mediating ischemic injury, metabolic imbalances, heart failure and atherosclerosis.  It is my hope and expectation that interventions that block these key pathways will be employed in the near future to treat patients with evolving myocardial infarction and diabetic cardiovascular complications.

 

Dr. Zhiguang Guo is Scientist of the Sanford Project at Sanford Research/USD and
Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Sanford School of Medicine in the University of South Dakota. He has profound expertise and experience in immunology, transplantation, pharmacology and diabetes. Before joining Sanford Health, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota and Director of Basic Research at the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation and at the Schulze Diabetes Institute. Dr. Guo graduated from Zhongshen Medical University in China and received his Ph.D. degree in Immunology from the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
 

The current research in his laboratory is to evaluate and develop therapeutic approaches to treating T1D by ameliorating autoimmunity and promoting beta cell regeneration.
