Editor-in-Chief
Kazuaki Kakehi,
PhD
Professor
Kinki University
Japan
Tel. +81-6-6721-2332
Fax +81-6-6721-2353

 Biography :

Dr. Kazuaki Kakehi obtained his PhD degree at Osaka University (Osaka, Japan) in 1975, and is professor of School of pharmacy, Kinki University (Higashi-Osaka, Japan). At the initial step of his carrier, he was interested in synthetic chemistry of glycans, and succeeded in the synthesis of homo-oligosaccharides of 1-6 glucans. Then, he has been developing various methods for quantitative analysis of carbohydrates using GC, HPLC, CE, and microchip electrophoresis. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and review articles and some book chapters. He also obtained patents on the methodologies for the analysis of glycoproteins and glycoconjugates.

Biography
 Research Interest :

N- and O-glycans in biological samples. At present, he is especially interested in proteoglycomics using CE/HPLC-MS techniques, and applies the methods to find clinical glycomarkers of some specific diseases. He is also interested in regulation studies on biopharmaceuticals and tissue engineering/regenerative medicine as a member of staffs of Japanese Pharmacopoeia.

Executive Editor
Xue-Long Sun
, PhD
Professor
Cleveland State University
USA
Tel. 216-687-3919
Fax 216-687-9298

 Biography :

Dr. Xue-Long Sun is an Associate Professor and has been promoted to a Full Professor (2012) in the Department of Chemistry, Cleveland State University and holds an adjunct faculty position at the Department of Molecular Cardiology, Cleveland Clinic since 2007. Dr. Sun earned his Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Kitasato University School of Pharmacy, Tokyo, Japan. He has published 73 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters. He has been trained as carbohydrate chemist working on synthesis and characterization of sialic acid derivatives during graduate research and glycosaminoglycan mimetics during postdoctoral research. Recently, he is working on glyco-macroligand-based microarray and biosensor for proteomics, pathogen identification; glyco-affinity macroligand engineering for glycoproteomics and glycomics research. In addition, he has worked on synthesis and characterization of lipid and glycolipid derivatives for more than ten years. He has been a Guest Editor for a Special Issue (2010, 30 (2)) of Carbohydrate Recognition and Applications for Medicinal Research Reviews (Wiley InterScience).

Biography
 Research Interest :

Dr. Sun has a wide experience of pharmaceutical and biomedical researches. First, he had worked on anti-influenza agent (Medicinal Chemistry) at RIKEN Institute (Japan) as a basic science special research fellow, and then worked on antithrombotic biomaterials (Biomedical Engineering) at Emory University School of Medicine as a NIH-funded research fellow. Currently, three major research projects are carried out in his group. First is glyco-macroligand engineering for proteomics, pathogen identification and targeted drug delivery applications; second is glyco-affinity macroligand engineering for glycoproteomics and glycomics research; third is exploring endothelial mimetic anithrombotic agents.

His focused strongly on methods development in past years and more recently on application of these strategies and techniques to relate carbohydrate detailed structure to function. For reasons of sensitivity and specificity these methods depend heavily on mass spectrometry and their adjunct techniques. Latest studies have involved the use of ion trapping to determine carbohydrate structures where specific ions are selected for activation, collision, and measurement multiple times, MSn. This ability to isolate substructures for further characterization has become of vital importance to understand the detailed linkage and branching patterns inherent in lipid and protein glycosylation.

We focus to identify the Ca2+-activated intermediate conductance (also known as KCNN4) K+ channel isoform that provides the driving force for Cl- secretion in several fluid secreting epithelial cells. To achieve this goal, we employ electrophysiology, biochemical, molecular and biophysical techniques.

 Biography :

My PhD is in Nutrition in Sports and Chronic Disease from Virginia Tech, focused on using nutrition to influence oxidative stress and inflammation in the chronic disease of obesity.  I conducted a variety of human studies including weight loss trials and controlled feeding studies of various durations.  Through my postdoc at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine I gained extensive experience in a basic science laboratory working with an inflammatory mouse model and cell cultures (immune cells, fat cells).  I am now an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati with the broad goal of researching the interaction between diet and inflammation in chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Biography
 Research Interest :

Nutrition plays a key role in the development of chronic diseases and inflammation has been identified as a key underlying factor of many chronic diseases that is heavily influenced by diet.  I am studying the effects of heart healthy dietary patterns on inflammation.  I am interested in how intake of antioxidants, vitamins/minerals, phytochemicals, fiber, and unsaturated fats may reduce inflammation in addition to reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

(1) elucidating the role of lipid-mediated injury of retinal pigment epithelial cells and how this injury promotes pathogenic changes in Bruch’s membrane and drusen formation, through activation of receptors including the nuclear receptors, peroxisome proliferator activated receptors and (2) investigating the role of pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages and mechanisms by which these effector cells of immunity are recruited to and retained in ‘injured’ retina, contributing to further morphological and functional damage. Our most recent studies have focused on osteopontin and its receptors, recently identified in several degenerative diseases of aging functioning to direct in situ localization of macrophages

Our research focuses on the use of mass spectrometry to answer biological/biomedical questions. The majority of our projects involve characterizing the post-translational modifications (e.g., glycosylation, phosphorylation) present on the protein of interest. For example, we are currently investigating the in vivo changes that occur in human eye lenses upon normal aging and cataract formation. We hope that this research ultimately will provide a mechanism to prevent cataracts.

Glycomics, genomics, and biochemistry approaches to study plant cell wall polysaccharide and proteoglycan metabolism. One of the most important differences between plant and animal cells is that plant cells have an extra-cellular structure called the cell wall that surrounds the protoplast. For plants, cell wall controls growth, morphogenesis, and interactions with the environment. For humans, cell wall polysaccharides and proteoglycans are important raw materials in the wood, paper, textile, fuel, and food industries. Thus, a good understanding of the biosynthesis of these macromolecules is a crucial step to improve plant development and production as a sustained source for our needs. The other area of research focuses on elucidating the role of the cross talk between the cell wall and the plasma membrane. This interaction can be crucial regulatory events for important physiological processes. We are interested in a subgroup of proteoglycans from plants called fasciclin-like arabinogalactan-proteins that are though to be involved in such interaction.

During his time at Yale, Dr Andrews had to fortune to imbibe the atmosphere of one of the world′s leading universities and was exposed to cutting-edge research that helped to focus his scientific ambitions to pursue a position as an active academic researcher. He has published in the world′s leading journals including Nature, Cell Metabolism, Neuron, Journal of Clinical Investigation and the Journal of Neuroscience. His work has attracted significant public interest, including invitation to write for Scientific Amercian and Australasian Science. Dr Andrews was interviewed by and included in an article entitled 13 things you never knew about your weight in the recent edition of The Reader′s Digest (January 2009). Dr Andrews came to Monash University late in 2008 as a Monash Fellow and has started to establish his own research program. He uses a combination of genetic mouse models (global knockouts, conditional knockouts using the cre/lox system) and in vivo physiology to probe questions about how metabolic status affects neuronal metabolism and degeneration.
