 Biography :

Russell E Gorga is currently an Assistant Professor in the Textile Engineering Chemistry and Science Department at NC State University. His main interests lie in developing polymer nanocomposites with improved properties mechanical conductive and barrier for functional tissue engineering and filtration applications. Before coming to NC State Dr Gorga was a post doctoral associate at MIT where he worked on improving the strength of brittle polymers such as poly methyl methacrylate This work was carried out under Prof Robert Cohen in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His doctoral work focused on developing relationships between molecularmicromacro properties of polymerpolymer interfaces. Specifically interfacial strength was mechanistically related to miscibility and mobility characteristics of the polymer constituents. In addition, Dr Gorga worked as a research engineer at Union Carbide Corporation from 1997 through 2000 where he focused on structureproperty relationships of semicrystalline polymers for high strength commodity applications.

Biography
 Research Interest :

My interests lie in producing polymer fibers (including nanofibers and nanocomposite fibers) with superior mechanical, barrier, and conductive properties. Specific interests include the fabrication and characterization of novel scaffolds for functional tissue engineering and filtration applications. Approaches include incorporation of nanoparticles for improved strength, conductivity, and optimal fiber morphology. Additionally, bicomponent fibers are utilized to optimize structural integrity and surface functionality of the fibrous structure. Development of scaffolds with antimicrobial properties are also a focus.

Biography
 Research Interest :

The essential objective of our research is to understand molecular recognition between engineered biomolecular nanostructures and their targets and, based on this understanding, to create biomimetic or bioinspired systems for various biomedical applications. For instance, it is a challenge to develop biomaterials that can mimic multiple functions of human tissues. We hypothesize that biomolecular nanostructures with the capability of molecular recognition can be incorporated into support materials for mimicking complex and dynamic roles of human tissues. Thus, the tissue-like biomaterials are able to “listen to” and “talk with” cells growing inside and outside of the biomaterials. We will apply diverse molecular recognition principles as a tool and will incorporate multiple components into the hydrogel, thereby “engineering” a single complex unit for regenerative medicine applications. We are also working on the development of biomimetic and bioinspired systems for drug delivery, biomolecular imaging, and cell biosensing.

Biography
 Research Interest :

Professor Jan O.Gordeladze’s research interests encompass hormonal and mechano-stimulatory control of cellular differentiation and metabolism, and include G-protein and growth factor mediated differentiation of stem cells to chondrocytes and osteoblasts, differentiation of peripheral blood monocytes to osteoclasts, and differentiation of naive T-cells to Th-1, Th-2, and Th-17 cells. A particular interest is taken in the interaction between differentiating stem cells, Th-cells, and osteoclasts related to phenotype acquisition and stability in a “cell engineering” setting (e.g. in inflamed joints) where the interaction between microRNA and transcription factor (TF) regulatory hierarchies plays a major role. Other (related) research interests are osteoporosis, the immunosuppressive effect of stem cells, the osteolytic effect of cancer cells, and finally the interaction of differentiating osteoblasts with osteoclasts in the engineering of osteoblasts in scaffolds used for bone replacement in general.
