Process Engineering of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), including embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, constitute an extremely attractive tool for cell therapy. Main principles for the bioprocessing of hPSCs, highlighting the impact of environmental factors, novel 3D culturing approaches and integrated bioreactor strategies for controlling hPSC culture outcome.
Links between Metabolism and Cancer

Metabolism generates oxygen radicals, which contribute to oncogenic mutations. Activated oncogenes and loss of tumor suppressors alters metabolism and induce aerobic glycolysis, which links the high rate of glucose fermentation to cancer. Excessive caloric intake is associated with an increased risk for cancers.
Biorefinery Effluent Upgrading Reactions

HY zeolites hydrophobized by functionalization with organosilanes are much more stable in hot liquid water than the corresponding untreated zeolites. Hydrophobization with organosilanes makes the zeolites able to stabilize water/oil emulsions and catalyze reactions of importance in biofuel upgrading.
Metal Biosorption In Lignocellulosic Biofuel Biorefinery Effluent

Biosorption of metals by microorganisms is a promising technology to remove accumulated non-process elements in highly recycled biorefinery process water. A model lignocellulosic ethanol biorefinery wastewater was created based on pulp mill effluent. Metal sorption by autochthonous microorganisms in an anaerobic bioreactor may be able to extend water reuse.
Targeted immunotherapy of cancer with CAR T cells

The adoptive transfer of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-expressing T cells is a relatively new but promising approach in the field of cancer immunotherapy. The genetic reprogramming of T cells with an artificial immune receptor that redirects them against targets on malignant cells and enables their destruction by exerting T cell effector functions
