Colin Butler is professor of public health at the University of Canberra, Australia. He graduated in medicine in 1986 and holds post graduate qualifications in tropical medicine and epidemiology as well as a multi-disciplinary PhD from the Australian National University (2002). He is co-founder of the NGO BODHI (www.bodhi.net.au). In 2009 the French Environmental Health Association named Colin as one of “100 Doctors for the Planet” in the countdown to the Copenhagen Climate Summit. He is sole editor of Climate Change and Global Health (CABI, 2014). He is known for his advocacy for a fairer distribution of resources, globally, including of opportunity, as a means to promote sustainability and to reduce an important driver of bio-terrorism. He has published several papers (and edited a WHO technical report) relevant to the evolution of infectious diseases. He is also known for arguing many conceptualisations of emerging infectious diseases are overly-simplistic.
