Abstract
The global community has intensified efforts to conserve and enhance biodiversity during the past two decades. The realization that biodiversity loss and human well-being is linked together both in ecological and economic terms has helped increase the extent of protected areas worldwide. However, species and ecosystems are still disappearing at an alarming rate. The key factors contributing to this trend are overexploitation of species, invasion by alien species, environmental pollution and contamination, global climate change, alteration of ecosystems, and degradation and loss of habitats. It is imperative that sustainable consumptive use approaches that can combine production and conservation functions are also important in conserving biodiversity in human- dominated and fragmented landscapes. Agroforestry, as part of a multifunctional working landscape, can play a major role in conserving and even enhancing biodiversity from farms to the landscape level in both tropical and temperate regions of the world. This paper will discuss about the mechanisms by which agroforestry systems sustain such high floristic and faunal diversity using case studies
Biography
Shibu Jose is the Harold E. Garrett Endowed Chair Professor of Applied Ecology and Agroforestry and Director of the Center for Agroforestry at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Prior to his current appointment he was Professor of Forest Ecology at the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He received his B.S. (Forestry) from India and M.S. and Ph.D. (Forest Science) from Purdue University. Current research efforts focus on ecological sustainability and ecosystem services of agroforestry systems and mixed-species biomass plantations and ecosystem restoration. He has published seven edited books and over 150 research articles. He serves as Editor-In-Chief of Agroforestry Systems, Associate Editor (former Editor) of Journal of Forestry and Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Ecology
