It is the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission which plays extremely important role in research, development and innovation in main areas including: • Defense and security, • Nuclear energy (Fission and Fusion), • Technological research for industry, • Basic physics research including matter and universe, • Health and Life Sciences, • Climate and Environment etc.
Based on its extensively recognized expertise, the CEA promptly participates in many collaborative projects along with its huge number of academic and industrial partners.
As per data in 2015, CEA contains- major research centers, large number of (15958) technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, 51 joint research units (UMR), 53 framework agreements with universities and schools, 753 priority patents filed in 2015, 27 Equipex (facilities of excellence), 33 Labex (Laboratories of excellence), 3 Idex (Initiatives of excellence), 187 start-ups since 1972 in the innovative technologies sector, 4.1 billion euros budget, 438 ongoing European projects in 2015.
It plays important role in international scenario also, since it is highly active in variety of areas and is being developing European and international collaborative programmes as a multidisciplinary scientific and technological research organization. It also plays sovereign missions entrusted to it by the State. It supports the deployment of French companies internationally. Finally, it works within the framework of the European Community.
