An institute under Slovak academy of sciences was founded in 1990 in Nitra. The genetic department was committed in producing best output in fruit trees, plants and forest species in a larger way. After 1998 institute has entered into biotechnology and gene engineering. Institute is deep into the aspects of cytological, morphological, biochemical and molecular stream. Institute is first of its kind in Slovakia to produce transgenic tobacco. Institute is keen on developing hybrid techniques and resistant varieties in a larger scale. It has genetic, molecular, biotechnology, breeding and management departments to carry out various kinds of research work. A standard structure with a directorate and scientific panel members are present for the smooth functioning. A good number of national, bilateral and EU funded projects are running. It has ties with local and globally reputed institutions for exchange of knowledge and man power.
